💚✨ Happy National School Psychology Week!

This year’s theme, “Find Your Path,” feels personal.

My path as a school psychologist has never been linear — it’s been grounded in advocacy, reflection, and heart.

Every day, I’m reminded why I do this work:
đź’« To help children and families access what they deserve.
đź’« To support educators and systems through transformation.
đź’« To ground every assessment, intervention, and consultation in ethical care.

Advocacy isn’t separate from the work — it is the work.

This month, I published my NASP Communiqué article, TRAP as Praxis, which reminds us to:
🔹 Identify our power
🔹 Document injustice
🔹 Advocate with courage

May we all continue to find (and honor) our paths — with purpose, truth, and compassion.

✨ Now Published!

“TRAP as Praxis: A Relational Framework for Ethical Resistance in School Psychology” — featured in the NASP Communiqué, November 2025 issue.

This piece explores what it means to lead, advocate, and practice ethically in times when equity and justice are being challenged.

TRAP — Truth. Record. Advocate. Power.
A framework for courage. A practice for liberation.

Happy MLK day! With service, education and fortitude, Dr. King’s dream manifests. We still have a lot to do, and our education provides responsibility and purpose to help, uplift and advocate for our community. Thank you, Dr. King! Your vision lives.

Happy Kwanzaa! Today centers on the Day 4 Kwanzaa principle of Ujamaa, which is cooperative economics. In 2021, the owner and founder of TKJ H.E.L.P.S. left a full-time public school psychologist position to reach more youth freely and effectively. Her ujamaa activities included the start of two businesses while collaborating and learning from other Black business owners. This led to her being able to pick up independent school psychologist contracts. Ujamaa embodies building connections that foster financial resources, goods and services in the community.

Networking with and educating each other are huge parts of this principle, and it aligns with the mission of TKJ H.E.L.P.S. Economic freedom leads to more intellectual freedom and the capacity to support more members of the community. Economic freedom and intellectual freedom are so important in our liberation.

Our children and teens may experience trauma directly or indirectly. How do we respond as the trusted adults in their lives?

In 2020, we recall seeing viral videos of Black people being killed. The trials included videos of traumatic events and testimonies of witnesses. Following the trials could bring back pain related to the traumatic event. Relatedly, our children could have seen, overheard, or been exposed to parts of the trial as well.

How do we help our children cope when they experience such heinous acts?

As we approach one year of the formation of TKJ H.E.L.P.S. LLC, let’s reflect on the current state affairs. Kyle Rittenhouse, the teenager accused of killing two people and shooting another during unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last summer has been found not guilty on all charges. This injustice aligns with the history of oppression in this country. In order to protect Black people, we must invest in the community economically, educationally and mentally. TKJ H.E.L.P.S. LLC's mission is to Heal, Educate, Lead, Protect and Serve the collective. Our advocacy, educational and mental health services strive to uplift and support you on your personal, communal and/or organizational goals related to children, adolescents and young adults.

We continue to honor Ahmaud Arbery’s family, friends and community while his three murderers are on trial. It’s Philadelphia Marathon Weekend, and we continue to shed light on this perpetual issue of the senseless murdering of Black people. Let’s run with Ahmaud. 🕊 DM for more information. 🖤

Happy Juneteenth! This day of observation should be observed from many different angles. Our children have witnessed our first Black U.S. president, overt racism from the following administration, vicarious trauma via social media while witnessing Black people being victims of police brutality, and now Juneteenth as a national holiday. Check in with our Black youth to take time to learn, reflect and grow together. Find out what Juneteenth means to them and you. Begin traditions that are ingrained in the culture. Support Black businesses. Amplify Black voices!

There are systemic policies, practices and stereotypes that keep our children and youth of color from achieving educational success. In 2020, it was reported that 88% of Black Americans now have a high school diploma, which is close to the national average of about 90% of the U.S. population that has graduated high school. Although work continues to be done, we are thriving against all odds! Congrats, grads!
