FACTS is a public charter school in Philadelphia serving 510 students in grades K-8.

The Folk Arts Cultural Treasures Charter School (FACTS) was founded in 2005 by two collaborating organizations to create a unique educational opportunity in Philadelphia’s Chinatown community. The two organizations, Asian Americans United and the Philadelphia Folklore Project, joined forces to address some of the educational needs of Philadelphia’s growing immigrant and non-English speaking commun

When students see the pictures of the new building they gasp, ask many questions, like if there will be a playground or lockers, jump up and down and clap, or are in disbelief with their jaws dropped and would turn and ask, "Is this real?" Many reactions also includes, "OMG!!!" One student asked if all their friends and teachers are coming too. A 4th grader said, "This looks like a TV school."

Alums who see it becomes sentimental and share stories about their time at FACTS, such as, the field trips, their favorite teachers, the songs they sang and all the special events that are unique to FACTS. Alums shared, "I hope my kids can come to FACTS one day."

Parents who see it are appreciative of all the work and one commented, "It made me very emotional."

Teachers and staff are flooded with ideas and provide helpful and smart feedback and input. One commented, "So, does this mean I won't be teaching in the halls?"

In 2005, we had just a little over 20 staff and teachers. In 2026, we have approximately 90. Every year, many families are disappointed and placed on our waitlist. FACTS has outgrown our current building that provided so much comfort and wonderful memories. A building that was once a textile factory... rich in stories of how this school on Callowhill was like a second home and community anchor and space. Our new building is the next phase of FACTS' history.

Congratulations to Ellen Somekawa, Executive Director and Founder and Eric Joselyn, Art Teacher, Founding Teacher and Folk Arts Coordinator. The strong foundation of FACTS exists because of the vision from both of you and our Founders. We are honored to have been nurtured, mentored and supported by you. We know your work will continue, but there will be more space for you to do the many other things that you love. We are beyond grateful. FACTS is the home and community that you've built and what a wonderous place it is.

Happy Retirement, Teacher Ellen and Teacher Eric!!!

(Message from Ellen after the staff and teachers celebrated.)

Dear Staff,

My heart is so full right now! What a perfect celebration and complete surprise. Tears started with the appearance of the lions and our alums, continued with PME and Philly Elmo, and didn't stop. I appreciated every bit of the thoughtfulness and care and the complete "FACTS-ness" of it all. The home crafted gifts, the memory videos, photos and scrapbook, the words of appreciation, and the line dancing at the end all added up to my idea of a perfect celebration of our retirement.

I'm touched beyond words.

Warm thanks,
Ellen

Principal Pheng invited by Teacher Kenny and the 7th/8th Grade Hip Hop Ensemble to dance. Students coached her after school and encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone and try something new, even if it is scary. She trusts Teacher Kenny and the students 💯 Thank you, Teacher Kenny and the 7th/8th Grade Hip Hop Ensemble, for this moment.
