Explain this: a lumen.

It is the hollow channel running through an instrument — a suction tip, a shaver, a scope. You cannot see inside it, you cannot scrub it from the outside, and soil dries in it fast.

That is why lumens get brushed and flushed to the IFU. What you cannot see is exactly the problem.

Question of the day: can you sterilize an instrument that has not been cleaned?

No. Soil shields microorganisms from the sterilant — steam cannot reach what is buried under dried blood or bioburden. Cleaning is not the step before the important step. It IS the step.

Your CRCST is annual. HSPA wants 12 continuing-education credits every year, plus 6 more for each additional cert you hold — CHL, CIS, CER.

One contact hour = one CE. Miss your anniversary month and you’re into late fees, then a re-test.

It is the manufacturer’s validated processing instructions for that specific device. Validated is the key word: those are the exact conditions someone proved would work.

Question of the day: you open the sterilizer and the pack is wet. Can it go to the OR?

No. Moisture gives microorganisms a path straight through the barrier — that is strike-through. A wet pack is treated as contaminated, no matter how good the cycle looked.

Wet pack = reprocess. Then go find out why it was wet.

Sterile processing is an entry point, not a ceiling.

Starting pay for an SPD tech runs about $22-$25 an hour. University hospitals and union departments go up to $28. Stack CHL or CIS and move toward lead, educator, or management.

The cert gets you in. The credentials move you up.
