We're excited to announce Penn Engineering’s new MSE in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (DSAI).

This on-campus graduate program brings together data science and AI, giving students the technical foundations and hands-on experience to build, analyze, and responsibly apply intelligent systems.

As of this week, applications for Fall 2027 for all on-campus master’s and Ph.D. programs are now open.

Gene-editing tools like CRISPR are powerful, but only work if they can reach the inside of a cell.

Many are too large to fit easily into the delivery vehicles used to carry them there.

To help overcome this challenge, Penn researchers used AI to develop FanzMAX, a compact potential alternative to existing gene-editing systems like CRISPR.

The resulting gene editor achieved an editing efficiency as high as 97% at the best-performing genomic target.

The work was led by Xue Sherry Gao, Associate Professor in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department, Penn and Penn Bioengineering, and postdoctoral fellow Shijie Wan.

A journey to Alpha Centauri, the closest star system to our own, could take current spacecraft up to 165,000 years.

However, a method using laser-driven light sails could be able to reduce that journey to about 20.

Penn Engineering researchers have developed a small prototype that combines key requirements for a light sail: exceptionally low weight, mechanical strength and high reflectivity.

It’s an early step toward the long-term goal of propelling tiny spacecraft to another star system within a human lifetime.

Access to clinicians who can provide autism evaluations for children is limited, contributing to long wait times.

With the goal of making assessments more accessible in clinics, schools, and homes, a team of researchers at Penn Engineering and Kennedy Krieger Institute used AI to develop technology that measures a child's ability to imitate simple movements, a proven behavioral marker of autism.

One of the researchers, Professor Rene Vidal told ABC News, "The idea is that this could become an automated component of the complete diagnosis," complementing clinicians' evaluations.

Researchers have found that the particles can attract and transport bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, PFAS, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and industrial chemicals.

Penn Engineering researchers are working to develop faster and simpler microplastic detection tools.
