Today, I started as the Director of College Counseling at Linden Hall the oldest all-girls boarding school in the country.

World Class College Counseling will continue to take clients. Please email me at [email protected] for more information.

In order to focus on my students and clients during such a crucial time in the college application process, social media posts will be less frequent.

Daily posts will likely resume in November.

Many of the top colleges in the nation are also the most expensive. So how do they make sure that they are accessible to any student that qualifies?

The colleges on this list are committed to meeting the full financial need of each student admitted. Furthermore, they do not consider a student’s need when evaluating them for admission.

Top students from all backgrounds can rest assured that if they apply to these schools and gain acceptance, they will only need responsible for paying their Expected Family Contribution. For low-income families, this could be $0.

While this does not level the playing field in terms of academic opportunities and support prior to college that negatively impact low-income and other underrepresented student populations, it is a step in the right direction.

For more information on need blind schools that meet 100% of need or building a college list with affordable options, email me at worldclasscollegecounseling.com.

Traditions are part of what make a college experience so memorable.

Many schools have the statue you rub for good luck, the fountain you jump in even if you aren’t allowed, or the seal you cannot step on until you graduate.

Others have more unique traditions like throwing toast onto the field after the third quarter of each football game at the University of Pennsylvania or dropping frozen pumpkins from a roof at midnight on the Saturday before a Halloween at MIT.

Share your school’s fun traditions in the comments bellow.

$79,539...That’s the total cost of attendance at Harvey Mudd College (HMC), the US college with the highest tuition. It is also more than many people (and families) make in an entire year!

Good thing that like many other expensive colleges, HMC gives a lot of financial assistance. Their average need-based scholarship or grant award (money you don’t have to pay back!) is $48,474, reducing the average net price to a much more palatable $31,065.

To reduce the out-of-pocket cost even more, students and their families can then choose to take our loans or apply for outside scholarships.

When building your college list, don’t exclude a school immediately because of its listed cost of attendance. All colleges participating in federal financial aid programs are mandated to provide a net price calculator on their websites. Use this tool to determine how much you would likely have to pay at each college you are considering. You can find net price calculators for any school of interest at https://collegecost.ed.gov/net-price.

Yesterday, we explored test blind admissions practices, so it is fitting that this week’s College of the Week is test blind Reed College.

Reed College is a small liberal arts college on the outskirts of Portland, OR with a reputation of attracting some of the most intellectually curious students. The 9:1 student faculty ratio allows for conference style classes where professors moderate intense discussions amongst students.

If you would like to learn more about Reed or receive guidance in building a best-fit college list, email [email protected].
