In partnership with UTRGV - The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley we hosted a Mexican American Studies Symposium at PSJA Southwest Early College High School.
The symposium was hosted by PSJA Dual Language Program and UTRGV as part of the culmination of a grant first awarded to promote Mexican American Studies in schools.
In addition to this grant, PSJA ISD is also currently collaborating with UTRGV to offer a Mexican-American Studies Dual Credit Course for high school students this fall semester, as part of more life-changing opportunities for all our students.
The symposium was hosted by PSJA Dual Language Program and UTRGV as part of the culmination of a grant first awarded to promote Mexican American Studies in schools.
In addition to this grant, PSJA ISD is also currently collaborating with UTRGV to offer a Mexican-American Studies Dual Credit Course for high school students this fall semester, as part of more life-changing opportunities for all our students.
Today, our PSJA Dual Language Program hosted the Social Studies Through Authentic & Relevant Curriculum Symposium at PSJA Southwest Early College High School with our partners from UTRGV - The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley!
Superintendent Dr. Jorge L. Arredondo and Board Vice President Jesse Vela, Jr. provided opening remarks emphasizing the value of connecting PSJA teachers with this work. This partnership started thanks to a grant provided by the university to foster Mexican American studies coursework and curriculum, emphasizing the value of language and culture among Dual Language Enrichment Program participants.
This collaboration is critical to PSJA’s goal of developing college ready, bi-literate graduates!

We are honored to be among few school districts selected to be part of the first-ever statewide dual language initiative, Texas Effective Dual Language Framework, being developed by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
The key goals of the new statewide dual language initiative include increasing effectiveness, increasing the number of dual language Pre-Kinder through 12th grade programs across the state, and reflecting on student outcomes of biliteracy, bilingualism, academic achievement in both languages and social cultural competence growth.
“It’s an honor to be part of this pilot. To be able to have TEA here wanting to learn from our PSJA Teachers and Principals, confirms that we are the ‘standard’ of what can be possible when you emphasize and recognize the importance of a dual language curriculum and the pedagogy that goes along with it,” said PSJA Superintendent Dr. Jorge L. Through this competition, students learned about the Dia de los Mu***os cultural tradition while practicing skills like research, creative writing and enhancing their dual language proficiency.
This is part of our efforts to instill love and pride in our multicultural heritage while ensuring every student has the experiences and resources necessary to achieve the highest levels of success.

In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we are proud to be offering students a new Mexican-American Studies Dual Credit Course this fall 2021 semester thanks to a partnership with the UTRGV - The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley!
The MASC 2301 Course is being held asynchronously in Spanish and allows 11th and 12th grade students the opportunity to earn a Humanities credit and Dual Language credit simultaneously.
PSJA ISD is among the first to offer MASC 2301 fully in Spanish allowing students in the district’s PSJA Dual Language Program the opportunity to also earn a credit towards their requirement to graduate with a Seal of Biliteracy on their diploma.

Congratulations to PSJA North Early College High School Senior Melenie Mendez-Rangel for being accepted to her dream ivy league institution, Cornell University!
The 18-year-old will be graduating with an Associate Degree in Mathematics from South Texas College more than two weeks before receiving her high school diploma. Upon graduation, she plans to major in Chemical Engineering at Cornell University with a focus on pharmaceutical research.
In addition to taking advantage of the rigorous academic opportunities available through the PSJA ISD Early College Program, Mendez-Rangel has been actively involved in UIL, Student Council, Choir, National Honor Society, Go Center, and Theatre.
She also shared being part of the PSJA Dual Language Program throughout her K-12th grade journey at Graciela Garcia Elementary, , and PSJA North Early College High School, helped her gain confidence in both languages and see many more opportunities in her near future.
“The Dual Language Program had a great impact on me. The rigorous classes and academic Spanish we learned have opened my world to so many opportunities,” shared the PSJA North ECHS Senior. “The Early College Program also helped get me ready for this journey. Earning an Associate Degree as a high school student really shows universities that you are dedicated and serious.”

First-ever Battle of the Books literacy competition in Spanish
“For many years, PSJA has participated in the Battle of the Books, which is only in English. As a dual language district, we felt that providing our dual language students, at all levels, with the opportunity to participate in La Batalla de Libros, it would include them in a district level event where they can show off their literacy skills in Spanish,” said PSJA Dual Language Program Director Olivia Martinez. “This was an excellent way to show our community that we value literacy, especially biliteracy. This truly was a historic event and our students definitely got to shine.”

PSJA ISD
We were honored to recently host the 5th Annual Mesa Comunitaria in partnership with ARISE and the Intercultural Development Research Association (IDRA) out of San Antonio.
During this unique conference, students get to lead the sessions aimed to help parents parents learn more about programs the district has to offer such as the Dual Language Enrichment Program and Early College Initiative.
"Being a part of this program helps me feel like I am part of a family and helps preserve who we are, our culture," said PSJA Memorial Early College High School student Alicia Vargas who is part of the PSJA Early College Program and Dual Language Program.

PSJA ISD Recognized Seal of Biliteracy
Did you know that PSJA is the only school district in South Texas that is graduating students with a Seal of Biliteracy?
At PSJA, students in elementary learn to read in their native language. Remember this: A strong native language = a strong second language and a weak first language makes it difficult for students to learn a second one.
Beginning in 2nd Grade, students receive two language arts courses, one in English and one in Spanish. This is how we make sure that students learn to read in two languages. Starting in PK3-5th grade science and social studies are taught in Spanish and math is taught in English.
Teachers use math, an hour of English or Spanish oral language development, and language of the day activities to ensure that students in PK3-1st grade develop their second language. It is through this content-based model, that our dual language students receive half of their instructional day in English and the other half in Spanish.
In secondary, students continue receiving content-based instruction in both languages. Students take Spanish language arts alongside English language arts and they have an option of taking various math, science or social studies courses in Spanish.
At PSJA, we strive in providing an excellent bilingual education that prepares students for the diverse workforce.

¿Sabías qué PSJA es el único distrito escolar en el sur de Texas que gradúa estudiantes con el sello de doble alfabetización?
En la primaria, los estudiantes aprenden a leer en su primer idioma. Al inicio de 2o grado, los estudiantes reciben dos cursos de artes de lenguaje. Uno en inglés y el otro en español. Así es como los estudiantes aprenden a leer en dos idiomas. Empezando en PK3-5o grado, ciencias y estudios sociales se enseñan en español y matemáticas se enseña en ingles.
En la secundaria los estudiantes continúan tomando clases en ambos idiomas. Los estudiantes toman arte de lenguaje en español y en inglés y tienen opción de tomar una variedad de cursos en matemáticas, ciencias, o estudios sociales en español.
En PSJA sobresalimos en proveer una excelente educación bilingüe que prepara a los estudiantes para un diverso ambiente laboral.

PSJA’s Dual Language Enrichment Program is an academic experience designed for students to develop stronger cognitive and academic skills through the development of on-level bilingualism and biliteracy.
Through a rigorous curriculum, students who participate in the program are academically instructed in English and Spanish, from Pre-Kinder to 12th grade. As a result, students have the opportunity to master both languages and enhance their education by developing the ability to fluently speak, read, write, and think critically in English and Spanish, which allows them to compete successfully in a global economy.
