The 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association held its 160th Anniversary Reunion in Annapolis, Maryland, July 28 - Aug. 1. This year's theme -- "Our American Military History Strong. Valuable. Brave. Courageous. Men who carried the weight of a nation and the hope of a people" -- emphasized the role Buffalo Soldiers and others played in making the nation what it is today. Members from many of the association's 34 chapters attended, including nine from the Mark Matthews Chapter. The agenda included tours to the National African American Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park in Church Creek, Md. The event also included the general membership meeting, history presentations, guest speaker Dr. James Dula, a casino night and a 1960s themed dinner and dance. (Courtesy photos). A portrait of Buffalo Soldier, Medal of Honor recipient and Fort Lee namesake Pvt. Fitz Lee was unveiled on National Buffalo Soldier Day recently at the installation's Ordnance Training Support Facility. Maj. Gen. The Mark Matthews Chapter yesterday helped recall the life and times of Trooper Bridget "Cookie" Lee McMullen during her funeral service at Peterburg's Good Shepherd Baptist Church. Trooper McMullen entered Fiddler's Green June 2 after a long illness. Foremost a mother and grandmother, McMullen was also a military spouse and former military exchange employee. She is also the sister of fellow Trooper Steve Jones, who often called her his "little big sister." Trooper McMullen joined the Mark Matthews Chapter roughly 10 years ago and supported the organization in many ways to include briefly serving as treasurer. To honor McMullen, MM Chapter President Gil Williams read a proclamation during the service from the 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry National Association. The MM Chapter family extends prayers and condolences to McMullen's son, Aaron P. McMullen-Ramirez, and her many friends and family.
