Join us for the Spring 2026 VSU Day of Brass on Tuesday, April 28th! This event for high school students will feature masterclasses from VSU Brass Faculty, clinics and VSU Student performances. This event is free but you must register in order to participate. The Day of Brass is interactive so we ask all attending student to bring their instruments. Join us on Tuesday, March 24th at 7pm for the Virginia State University Percussion Studio Faculty Joint Recital featuring Drs. Lamon Lawhorn and Ethan Strickland. The evening will include solo, duet and chamber performances from VSU music students, faculty and percussion ensemble.

The recital will include works by Beck, Calamas, Hernandez, Hubbard, Pickering, Pierce, and Skinner

Join us this weekend for the inaugural VSU Chamber Music Festival! This new annual event reflects the Department of Music’s deep commitment to ensemble performance, interdisciplinary artistry, and innovative musical experiences for students, artists, and the wider community.

The centerpiece of the festival is the nationally acclaimed Sound of Silent Film Festival, an electrifying fusion of silent cinema and newly composed live music. Presented by Access Contemporary Music and executive director Seth Boustead, SOSF pairs silent films with original scores by leading contemporary composers, performed live by VSU student and faculty chamber musicians.

This immersive concert experience transforms the traditional concert experience: modern sound reimagines silent images in real time. The result is a powerful convergence of the visual and aural, of cinema and contemporary chamber music.

The Sound of Silent Film Festival has been presented across the country to wide critical acclaim, and its appearance at Virginia State University marks a major artistic milestone for the Department of Music and the new Chamber Music Festival.
