All work and no play… no way! 🎉

After a full day of engaging sessions, our VSU GROWS Scholars traded notebooks for fun and laughter during an evening outing at Swaders Sports Park! From friendly competition to unforgettable moments, the night was filled with smiles, team bonding, and memories that will last a lifetime.

At VSU GROWS, we believe that building meaningful connections outside the classroom is just as important as learning inside it. A little fun, a lot of laughter, and even stronger friendships made for the perfect way to end an incredible day!

Oh, What a Day! 💙🧡

Our VSU G.R.O.W.S. (Gaining Real Opportunities With Students) Scholars wrapped up their last full day with a series of engaging and impactful sessions designed to challenge, inspire, and prepare them for success both in college and beyond.

✨ The day began with “The Perfect Knot: Bows & Beaus,” facilitated by Dr. Shandra Cain, Executive Director of VSU CAMPS, where scholars explored professionalism, confidence, and making a lasting first impression.

🎤 Next, scholars found their voices during “Stand & Deliver: Mastering the Mic,” led by Assistant Professor Cassandra Price, gaining valuable public speaking and presentation skills.

💭 After lunch, Dr. Kristal Clemons, Associate Dean of the College of Education, facilitated “Beyond the Labels: Seeing People, NOT Categories,” encouraging scholars to embrace empathy, understanding, and the value of seeing others beyond stereotypes.

🌟 The afternoon continued with “Leadership: Who Are You When No One Is Watching?” presented by Dr. Willis Walter, Dean of the College of Education, reminding scholars that true leadership is demonstrated through character, integrity, and the choices we make every day.

❤️ The day concluded with “Heart Check: The Connection Code,” facilitated by Ms. Cherrelle N. Davis, M.Ed., Resident in Counseling, where scholars reflected on building healthy relationships, emotional wellness, and meaningful connections.

As our week comes to a close, we are incredibly proud of the growth, engagement, and transformation we’ve witnessed in each of our scholars. Tomorrow, we celebrate all they have accomplished and the bright futures that lie ahead!

🍽️ From the Classroom to the Table!

Earlier this week, Dr. Rainey facilitated the session, “From Napkin to Networking: The Art of the Meal,” where our VSU G.R.O.W.S. Scholars learned the fundamentals of professional dining etiquette and how proper table manners can leave a lasting impression.

Tonight, it was time to put those lessons into practice during “Maison du Savoir: Fine Dining” at The Cheesecake Factory alongside the VSU G.R.O.W.S. staff. Our scholars confidently demonstrated the etiquette skills they learned throughout the week while enjoying an evening of fellowship, networking, and fine dining.

A very special Happy Birthday goes to Dr. Jefferson! 🎉💐 While she could have celebrated her special day anywhere, she chose to spend it investing in and celebrating with our VSU G.R.O.W.S. Scholars. Your dedication, selflessness, and commitment to pouring into the next generation did not go unnoticed. Thank you for making your birthday a memorable experience for our scholars!

Our VSU G.R.O.W.S. Scholars stepped out of the classroom and into a real-world learning experience during “Suit Up for Success: Professional Shopping Experience,” facilitated by the VSU G.R.O.W.S. Staff.

From learning how to build a professional wardrobe to understanding the importance of dressing for interviews, internships, and future careers, our scholars gained valuable knowledge that will help them make confident first impressions.

Success starts with preparation—and sometimes, that preparation begins with the right outfit. We’re proud to equip our students with the tools, confidence, and professional skills they need to thrive.

This afternoon, our VSU G.R.O.W.S. Scholars explored the power of technology during “Tech Check: The Digital Toolbox, A.I. Unlocked,” facilitated by Dr. Aretha McNeil.

Scholars were introduced to essential digital tools that will help them excel in high school, college, and beyond, including:

🔹 Prezi
🔹 Canva AI

From creating engaging presentations to leveraging artificial intelligence for productivity and creativity, students discovered how technology can enhance learning, communication, and innovation.

A huge thank you to Dr. McNeil for empowering our scholars with practical digital skills and introducing them to tools that will prepare them for success in today’s technology-driven world!

Our VSU G.R.O.W.S. Scholars took another step toward financial independence during “Money Is the Motive: Budget Like a Boss,” an engaging session facilitated by Dr. Andrews, Financial Expert.

From creating realistic budgets to understanding smart spending habits, saving strategies, and making informed financial decisions, our scholars gained valuable tools that will help them build a strong financial foundation for college and beyond.

Financial literacy is more than managing money—it’s about creating opportunities, making confident choices, and investing in your future.

Our VSU G.R.O.W.S. Scholars took an important step toward preparing for college and future careers during “LinkedIn Launch Lab: The Power of Personal Branding,” facilitated by Dr. Geneda Kearney, Education Specialist.

During this engaging session, scholars learned how to establish a professional online presence, build a strong personal brand, showcase their skills and accomplishments, and begin creating meaningful professional connections. From crafting compelling profiles to understanding the importance of networking, our students gained valuable tools that will help them stand out as they continue their educational and career journeys.

🎉 The final week of VSU CAMPS is officially underway, and VSU G.R.O.W.S. (Gaining Real Opportunities With Students) is in full swing! 💙🧡

Our G.R.O.W.S. Scholars have officially moved in and wasted no time jumping right into their sessions!

This week, we are proud to welcome 14 rising high school seniors representing communities across Virginia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Throughout the week, these scholars will engage in interactive, hands-on learning experiences designed to prepare them for success in high school, college, and beyond.

The mission of VSU G.R.O.W.S. is to provide students with a realistic glimpse into the life of a college student. From academic expectations and personal development to leadership, time management, technology, financial literacy, and college readiness, every session is intentionally designed to build confidence, expand knowledge, and empower our scholars for the next chapter of their educational journey.
