Fun steve Gadd idea! I like to show students ideas like this and relate it to rudiments. I see this as influenced by the 6 stroke roll. He uses bass drum instead of a “R” and then the way he orchestrates it around the toms chabges the sticking of the rudimentary.

Being creative and exploring new ways of playing rudiments around the kit can lead you to interesting places!

Heres a couple variations for you on how to orchestrate an idea you heard someone else play - I took the same sticking Vinnie Colaiuta played, moved the notes to different parts of the drum set. Learn these and then come up with your own ideas!

Great creative idea from Vinnie Colaiuta using rudiments! This is s 6 stroke roll followed by a single stroke roll orchestrated around the drum set.
