National & NYS School Bus Safety Week Communication & Safety Guide
Dates: Oct 19, 2026–Oct 23, 2026
Theme: "Red Lights Mean STOP!"

Overview
National School Bus Safety Week is observed across New York State and the nation during the third full week of October. It is an opportunity for parents, students, teachers, motorists, administrators, and bus operators to emphasize school bus safety and recognize the dedication of our transportation staff.

Key Events
Operation Safe Stop Day (Oct 21, 2026): A statewide enforcement and public awareness effort bringing together school districts and law enforcement to educate motorists that passing a stopped school bus with red lights flashing is illegal and dangerous on public roads, school grounds, or private roads.

Safety Tips for Students
At the Bus Stop:
Arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before scheduled pick-up time.
Parents should be waiting at the bus stop if required by school policy.
Stand back at least 15 feet from the road/curb while waiting.
Never run after or in front of a bus.
On the Bus:
Take assigned seats immediately and remain seated facing forward.
Keep backpacks on your lap or under the seat; keep aisles completely clear.
No eating, drinking, or chewing gum on the bus.
Keep hands, head, and feet inside the bus at all times.
Use quiet voices and avoid distracting the driver.
Proper Crossing Procedure:
Walk 15 giant steps (15 feet) ahead of the bus until you can see the driver’s face.
Wait for the driver's signal before crossing.
Check left, right, and left again before stepping across the road.
If you drop something near the bus, never attempt to pick it up—tell the driver immediately.

Guidelines for Parents & Community Members
Parent Visibility Requirement: Parents/guardians or authorized designees must be visible at drop-off locations for PK–5 students. Certain restrictions apply, please see form.
Motorist Responsibility: It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus when red lights are flashing on public roads, school grounds, or private roads.

Peru Central School District anticipates appointing an individual to a 1.0 FTE Teaching Assistant position for the 2026–2027 school year.

📍 Assignment:
• PK–12, with an elementary assignment currently anticipated
• 6:1:1 classroom
• Monday–Friday, 8:20 AM–3:20 PM

📚 Responsibilities May Include:
• Planning, preparing, and delivering instructional activities that facilitate active learning
• Providing individualized academic, social, physical, and behavioral support under the direction of teachers and therapists
• Collaborating with instructional teams and student support and nursing personnel
• Assisting with basic life skills, hygiene, and toileting
• Assisting with attendance and record keeping
• Performing other duties as outlined in the contract

Peru Central School District has six (6) full-time Teacher Aide positions available for the 2026–27 school year, with positions ranging from 30 to 40 hours per week.

Position Highlights:
• 10-month positions
• $18.06–$23.87/hour based on the 2026–27 CSEA Salary Schedule
• Health insurance/buyout eligible
• Work directly with students in our elementary and secondary schools
• Support classroom instruction, student behavior, and daily routines
• Opportunities may include assisting with student health, hygiene, and toileting needs
• Experience with non-violent crisis intervention and physical restraint is beneficial for applicable positions
• Some positions require School Bus Monitor duties, including completion of required training and a Physical Performance Test (PPT)

🚌 NOW HIRING: SCHOOL BUS MONITOR 🚌

Peru Central School District is seeking one (1) 10-Month, Hourly School Bus Monitor to join our Transportation team!

📍 Work Location: Bus Garage
🕐 Hours: Approximately 2 hours/day, while school is in session
🚍 Anticipated Assignment: Elementary Bus Run
• Morning: 8:00 AM–9:00 AM
• Afternoon: 3:00 PM–4:00 PM
Actual work hours will be determined by the Transportation Supervisor.

💰 Salary: $17.95–$21.10/hour
Based on the 2026–27 CSEA Salary Schedule

🚌 Qualifications & Skills:

• Working knowledge of basic first aid methods
• Ability to establish positive relationships with students and others
• Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions
• Patience and resourcefulness when working with students with disabilities
• Ability to assist and potentially lift a student on and off the school bus
• Physical ability to meet the demands of the position
• Ability to collaborate with the school nurse regarding food allergies and EpiPen use

📋 Requirements:

✅ Must be at least 19 years old
✅ Successful completion of a Physical Performance Test (PPT)
✅ Completion of 4-hour monitor pre-service training before riding the bus
✅ Completion of a 10-hour training course in August within the first year of employment
