As Cattle Producers it is important to take some time and consider what stage of the cattle industry you fit in. Arkansas is a majority Cow-Calf state. As we wean calves or make management plans make sure to consider what stage of the cattle industry will receive your product or calf next.

Having a management plan for weaning and vaccinating calves that match what cattle buyers want can increase the value of your cattle.

It's getting close to the time of year when producers are weaning spring calves and need to make marketing decisions, as well as, on what vaccines to give calves.

Thursday, August 20th, 6pm at the Perry County Fair Grounds for the Perry County Cattlemen’s Association monthly meeting, I will be discussing recommended calf vaccines and buyer preferences producers should consider when vaccinating and weaning calves.

A stretch of high temperatures and continuous drought is really starting to be visual in summer pastures. I have heard some reports of producers having to put out some hay. Luckily overall it seems to have been a good start to hay production but if you find yourself running out of pasture and wondering what to do here are some things to consider.
I recommend monitoring pastures and hayfields regularly for Fall Armyworms, they have been found in Perry County and surrounding areas cooler days and moisture may increase activity. You can reach out to the Perry County Extension Office we have sweep nets to help producers monitor fields for insects.
Now is also the time to be planning for winter grazing. Select fields for stockpiling warm season grasses. Line up seed and time for overseeding a winter annual – ryegrass, wheat, oats, clover- on 25% of warm season pastures.
