PHS Sends Three Students to Speech and Debate Nationals!

For the first time in the Perrysburg team history, three students who qualified and competed in 2025 qualified for a second time to compete in the 2026 101st National Speech and Debate Tournament held in Richmond, Virginia June 14- June 19, 2026. The tournament hosted over 7,000 students representing 1,500 school districts.

Junior Iris Weisstein advanced once again this year to compete in the octo-finals, which was the top 60 International Extemporaneous Speakers. Students are given 30 minutes to research a verified sourced answer to a question and then present a seven-minute speech to judges. Questions are internationally themed and not known prior to the students. Examples are “How can Myanmar restore economic stability amid political crisis?” and “Is nuclear power necessary for global decarbonization?” Iris is the first female extemporaneous speaker to represent Perrysburg at the national tournament after 8 male international speakers over the past twenty years. She received a first-place score from 7 out of 12 judges during the preliminary rounds. Iris will spend her senior academic year in Germany as an exchange student.

Last year, Junior Alex Ban was the team’s first competitor ever to advance to Nationals in Informative Speaking. This year Alex competed in Expository Speaking with an original writing presentation of “Bro Bro Bro Bro Bro” explaining “Semantic Satiation,” the effect of how a word loses meaning in repetition. Alex will serve as the team vice president next season.

Junior Robinson Zhang competed in Humorous Interpretation for a second time with his performance “Funny Kid for President” by Matt Stanton. During the qualifying for Nationals process this past February at the District Tournament, Robinson ranked first representing the Western Ohio District. Robinson will serve as team president in the 2026-27 season.

The team is coached by Head Coach Jennifer Nagy Lake, Retired Coach Debra Kemp, and Debate Coach Alex Leong.

A National Honor for Perrysburg Junior High String Ensemble

Perrysburg Schools is proud to announce that the Perrysburg Junior High String Ensemble has been selected to perform at the 2027 American String Teachers Association (ASTA) National Orchestra Festival in Chicago, one of the nation's most prestigious performance opportunities for middle school orchestras.

This invitation was earned through an audition recording submitted by the 2025-2026 Perrysburg Junior High String Ensemble whose exceptional musicianship and commitment to excellence made this national recognition possible. While many of those students have now moved on to high school, this achievement belongs to them as well. Their hard work earned this honor, and we are proud to recognize their role in creating this opportunity for the students who will represent Perrysburg at the festival during the 2026–27 school year.

The ASTA National Orchestra Festival will provide students with the opportunity to perform on a national stage, receive feedback from distinguished clinicians, and learn alongside outstanding school orchestras from across the country. It is an experience that reflects the tradition of excellence in music education at Perrysburg Schools.

As preparations begin, our community has the opportunity to help ensure every student can participate. Thanks to the generosity of the Perrysburg Schools Foundation Board of Trustees, the first $10,000 donated to the PJHS String Ensemble ASTA National Orchestra Festival Campaign will be matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling the impact of every contribution.

Support the PJHS String Ensemble ASTA National Orchestra Festival Campaign and help our students represent Perrysburg on the national stage by making a gift at https://secure.qgiv.com/event/pjhs-asta/.

Congratulations to the talented musicians whose performance earned this invitation and to the students who will proudly represent Perrysburg Schools in Chicago in 2027. Your dedication, perseverance, and commitment to excellence continue to make our entire Yellow Jacket community proud.
