Essay season is about to be in full swing and the one thing I find myself saying over and over to my rising seniors is:
It’s not an English essay. Stop writing it like one.
That’s genuinely the biggest mistake I see. Students sit down, go into five-paragraph mode, and produce something that’s technically fine and tells me almost nothing about who they actually are. Their English teacher would probably give it a B+. An admissions officer is going to forget it by lunch.
The application is a full picture. Grades, rigor, activities, recommendations, essays, all of it together. Some families lose sleep over the essay, others barely give it a second thought. Neither of those is the right approach. It matters, just not in the way most people think it does.
What colleges are actually trying to do is figure out who is behind the transcript. They already have your numbers. The essay is where they find out how you think, what you notice, something that lights you up, a quirk, what people wouldn’t know about you just from your transcript or activities.
So what they don’t want is a performance. The answer you rehearsed. The story you picked because it sounded impressive. They’ve read a thousand of those and they all blur together.
Your voice should sound like you, the way you’d tell a story to someone you actually like. Specific. A little imperfect. Real.
If I read your essay and I could have written it myself, we have a problem.
Parents, if you’ve been in heavy edit mode, it might be time to hand it back. Their voice has to be the one on the page.
The students who nail this aren’t necessarily the best writers. They’re the ones who stopped trying to impress and just said something true. That’s not just good essay advice — it’s a skill that follows them into every job interview, every hard conversation, every room they walk into for the rest of their life.

More than seven million student loan borrowers entered a new period of chaos and uncertainty this week after a federal court rejected an Education Department request to immediately kill a Biden-era repayment program.

Student loan borrower advocacy groups immediately praised the decision, suggesting that it offers borrowers with student loans enrolled in the SAVE plan a critical lifeline during a particularly chaotic period of rapid changes to repayment programs.

But the Education Department has, so far, not released any formal response to the decision, provided guidance on what the dismissal means for affected federal student loans, or indicated what student loan borrowers should expect. And it is far from clear that the department will simply turn the SAVE plan “back on” again after it’s been blocked for more than a year and a half.

I love Nate Bargatze. This made me laugh - but then it got me thinking.

Humor has a way of saying the things we avoid saying out loud, especially when it comes to college and “the right path.”

We carry a lot of assumptions about what success is supposed to look like, and certain options can trigger reactions before we even realize why.

For some students, community college really is the right choice — not as a backup, but as a thoughtful, intentional path. It can offer more support, less financial pressure, space to figure things out, or a more realistic way to balance school with real life. Sometimes it’s the environment — not the ambition — that needs adjusting.

Sometimes it’s worth noticing our reaction before deciding what it means.
