📚🌳 Reading, Walking, Learning, and Belonging! 🌳📚
Last week, our fifth grade and first grade students came together for a special StoryWalk® featuring the heartwarming book The Belonging Tree. This wonderful literacy experience was made possible through a partnership with Uniontown Public Library and A Child’s Place, PA-Parents as Teachers.
Our fifth graders took on important leadership roles throughout the event. Some students became readers, sharing pages of the story and engaging first graders in thoughtful discussions, while others served as guides, leading groups from sign to sign throughout “the bowl.” After completing the StoryWalk, our fifth grade leaders helped their younger peers create a craft connected to the book’s message of kindness, inclusion, and belonging.
The StoryWalk® transformed our outdoor space into an interactive reading adventure! Each yard sign displayed a page from the book along with discussion prompts that encouraged meaningful conversations and deeper comprehension. Students enjoyed the beautiful weather while experiencing the joy of reading in a unique and engaging way. Other grade levels also had the opportunity to participate and enjoy the story outdoors.
StoryWalks® are an innovative way to combine literacy and physical activity, encouraging children and families to read, move, think, and connect. The selected books for Pennsylvania’s StoryWalk® initiative focus on nature, kindness, caring, and inclusion; important messages that help build strong communities and lifelong readers.
A huge thank you to Uniontown Public Library and A Child’s Place, PA – Parents as Teachers for bringing this enriching experience to our students. We love opportunities that foster leadership, literacy, collaboration, and community connections!
