There are more than 20,000 high-school band programs in America, some with as many as 400 members. “Over the past 30 years, their shows have evolved into spectacles that John Philip Sousa couldn’t have imagined,” Burkhard Bilger writes. The top bands have dozens of staff, budgets of hundreds of thousands of dollars, and fleets of trucks for their instruments, props, costumes, and sound systems. “They don’t just parade up and down the field playing fight songs. They flow across it in shifting tableaux, with elaborate themes and spandex-clad dancers, playing full symphonic scores.”

Students rehearse intensely, not to play well at football games, but to prepare for a series of fiercely competitive marching-band contests in the fall, culminating in the Grand National Championships, in Indianapolis. The area is “the capital of the new marching-band culture,” Bilger writes, and has two of the country’s most successful marching band programs: the Avon High School Marching Black and Gold and the Carmel High School Marching Greyhounds.

For last year’s nationals, the Carmel marching band performed Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra. “The concerto was hard for any high-school band to tackle, yet the Carmel musicians had to play it from memory, while marching, dancing, and crab-stepping sideways across the field,” Bilger writes. “It’s hard to think of another group activity, past or present, of such complexity.” For our 100th Anniversary Issue, Bilger follows three bands to the national championships and reports on the competitive marching-band circuit. It's official, I'm finally on a Ten Jinn track! Who knew bribing my friend John Strauss with a case of beer for music history help during my grad degree back in 2007 would lead to this. 😂

BLACKSTAR is a Brand New, Monstrous 10-plus-minute EPIC Release Coming July 19th by Legendary Progressive Art Rockers Ten Jinn.

BLACKSTAR was originally slated for release in 2018 for the release Ziggy Blackstar (a tribute to David Bowie) however the band felt that it would probably have been in bad taste to do that so soon after he died in 2016.

Ten Jinn finally settled on releasing their take on the title track BLACKSTAR now as a stand-alone, this completes the circle for the band, taking them from Ziggy Stardust to BLACKSTAR.

THE BLACKSTAR SESSIONS:
John Paul Strauss – Lead and backing vocals, keyboards
Mark Wickliffe – Drums
Mike Matier – Guitars
Ken Skoglund – Saxes
Matt Overholser – Bass
Matt Brown – Keyboards
Michelle Cosgrove – Flutes, backing vocals

Produced by John Paul Strauss, Ken Skoglund and Mark Wickliffe

Mixed and mastered by Ken Skoglund (Sound Control Sweden)
Artwork by Nick Katona

No better way to end the academic year than with a party!
My adult students and partners came to my place, we wheeled out the piano and keyboard, and cracked open some wine. Sightread some duets, solos, and resurrected our California Dreamin ensemble from last year's Porchfest.

No pics, but lasting memories. What a blast!
