Holy Spirit School Holy Spirit School accepts the challenge of fulfilling our mission as a Catholic school.

Our aim is to educate the children's mind, strengthen their God given intellectual powers, satisfy their soul with knowledge of their faith, and strengthen their body with organized physical activity. As educators we assume our responsibilities to God, and treat each of our students as precious gifts. We have adapted our curriculum to educate and support those entrusted to us with knowledge and understanding of our ever-changing world. This ability to integrate our curriculum continues to create an environment of love and understanding deeply rooted in our faith. It is in this way that we enable our students to gain the self-confidence and esteem so needed by the youth of today. Our primary goal is to give each student a solid moral and academic foundation so that they will be prepared to make a difference in this world. We feel that as a strong Catholic School we serve as a cornerstone in the total growth of our students. We stand firm in the truths of our religion as they relate to life issues today.

Thank you to our wonderful dad volunteers who are so generously giving of their time to make our new school drop off procedures run as smoothly, safely and efficiently as possible. The new drop off procedure was approved for implantation to streamline the flow of traffic and increase safety by minimizing the amount of time that our children are outside of the school building prior to entering.

AS A REMINDER:

ALL TRAFFIC (yellow arrows): Enter from New Street coming off Newark Pompton Turnpike

WALK-UP Drop-off (black arrows): Enter the lot from either of the first two entrances on New Street (convent side of the lot) and park in the green shaded areas of the lot. Use the alley between the church and the garage to get to the pedestrian walkway to cross the lot. To exit, utilize the same entrances and make a LEFT onto New Street. Pedestrian traffic will be limited to the orange shaded areas on the map.

DRIVE-UP Drop-off (red arrows): Enter through the second entrance on New Street and proceed down the lane parallel to New Street. Proceed to the shaded “DROP OFF ZONE”. Once clear, exit out of the far-right entrance and proceed to make a LEFT onto New Street.

For this process to succeed, it is imperative that we get 100% cooperation and compliance with the above. While it may be tempting to come the other way on New Street, doing so will cause unnecessary delays and congestion for everyone else. Be a good HSS community member, your cooperation and compliance are greatly appreciated. A few other reminders:

Absolutely no stopping on Newark Pompton Turnpike to drop off

No pets are allowed on school grounds, to include the parking lot

The mission of Holy Spirit School is “to provide a rounded education for the whole person—the head, the heart and the hands-while helping all of our students to become saints”.

We need your support to make our voices heard for this program which will open the opportunity for many more children to benefit from the gift of authentic Catholic education. New Jersey needs to opt-in by January 1, 2027. See details below:

From the New Jersey Catholic Conference:
Make Your Voice Heard – Take Action

Great news! A new federal tax credit could bring scholarship support to New Jersey K–12 students, with no state tax dollars required. But it only happens if New Jersey opts in by January 1, 2027. Donors who give to approved scholarship organizations get a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit of up to $1,700, or $3,400 for married couples. Those donations become scholarships that help families with tuition, tutoring, books, and school supplies. If New Jersey doesn't opt in, those donations will help students in other states instead. The federal rules are out, so now is the time. Urge Governor Sherrill to say "yes" for New Jersey students in both public and non-public schools!

It is quick and easy take action now:

Friday, September 11, Holy Spirit School celebrated the beginning of a new school year with the long-held annual tradition of the ice cream social. Meant to welcome new members of the Holy Spirit School family, while also bringing back long time families, it is an event that has been a part of the new school year for nearly two decades.

Fr. Cesar’s opening remarks included a prayer for the coming school year. Asking students and parents to put themselves in God’s presence, Fr. Cesar offered the following blessing:

“Heavenly Father, thank you for bringing our Holy Spirit families together once again for another great year. We are grateful for the gift of a new school year, and for the students, parents, teachers and staff. We ask that you bless this year with joy, kindness, respect, friendship, and love of learning. Guide our students as they grow in faith and knowledge, and give our teachers wisdom and patience (“much, MUCH patience!”) each day. As we enjoy our time together at this ice cream social, let it be a sweet reminder of the wonderful community you have blessed us with here at Holy Spirit. May our year ahead be filled with your love, grace, and many joyful moments.”

The children and adults then joined Fr. Cesar in praying the “Our Father”.

As part of the morning Mass today, September 11, Fr. Cesar included in his homily a commemoration of the events 25 years ago.

“Today we commemorate as a country 25 years ago a terrible day in the history of our country. We can’t forget what happened on September 11, 2001. But do you know what that day proved in our nation’s history? It proved something that St. Francis said many years ago, that the light of a single candle cannot be extinguished by all the darkness in the world.

“That day was a dark day because evil people who did evil things sought to inflict great pain on innocent lives for barbaric reasons. But our response as a nation, as Christians, was an overwhelming demonstration of love and human solidarity.

“Those months that followed the great tragedy of September 11, 2001 were beautiful months in our nation. Our churches were filled. Despite a great tragedy, our nation rose, and we rose to the occasion by the joy of bearing witness to our solidarity as a human family, by augmenting the respect that we want to cultivate in our culture, in our society, in the hearts and minds of our young ones for their fellow human beings, and we made sure the world saw that by the many ways in which people love each other.

“Today as we remember the many people who lost their lives, we commend them to Almighty God and to his mercy, but above all we pray for the entire world that we may be open to God’s grace so that what happened on September 11, 2001, shall never happen again.”

The first school Mass of the 2026/2027 academic year was celebrated with the student body, teachers, aides, school parents, and faithful parishioners.

In his message to the children and all present, Fr. Cesar expressed his hope and vision for the school year: “Every time we gather around the altar, we recall how much Jesus loves us, but also how much he expects of us as an academic community.”

Fr. Cesar extended a warm “welcome back” to all of our children, our teachers, faculty, staff and our school parents. He expressed a special welcome to those new members who have joined our family of Holy Spirit this year.

Continuing his vision for the school year, our Pastor shared, “At Holy Spirit this year I want us to strive for three things in particular: (1) I want us to be a joyful school. I want anyone who walks into Holy Spirit to realize that there is a deep and genuine joy in learning; (2) I want us to be a respectful school by the way we treat each other and by the way you cooperate with your teachers and aides; (3) I want us to be a loving school. The more we love, the more we become like Jesus.

“The most sacred thing we have as Catholics is the Holy Eucharist, when Jesus becomes present on the altar. The second most sacred thing we have as Catholics is the person sitting right next to you because God lives in and through them, God smiles at us through them, God lends us a helping hand in and through them.

“Catholic education was founded to bear witness to the beauty of Jesus Christ and to make Him known to others by the way that you and I love each other.”
