Is anyone else feeling a few back-to-school butterflies?

The start of a new school year can bring excitement... and a little anxiety for both students and parents. If your child is feeling nervous (or if you are!), I highly recommend checking out Flusterclux, a podcast by psychotherapist and anxiety expert Lynn Lyons.

When an organization shares that they’re giving away FREE science supplies for science teachers… you go!

Ms. Oliveira and Mrs. Monahan were there and stocked up!

We have a feeling our students are going to benefit from their haul! Thanks to these two for always being on the lookout for ways to make science engaging, hands-on, and fun!

Mrs. Fournier has spent the last four weeks on an incredible road trip through North Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and Tennessee!

Her final stop before heading home was Mount Mitchell in North Carolina—the tallest peak east of the Mississippi River.

What makes this stop even cooler? It's connected to what our sixth graders will be learning this year! During their Plate Tectonics and Rock Cycle unit, students will explore how Mount Mitchell was formed and why it continues to slowly move southwest as Earth's tectonic plates shift.

Summer adventures and real-world connections make science come alive. We can't wait to hear all about Mrs. Fournier's trip when school starts!

Who's ready for some disc golf?

We're excited to introduce Disc Golf to NMS this year! Students will have the opportunity to play during lunch and PE classes.

Whether you're a seasoned player or trying it for the very first time, it's a fun way to get outside, stay active, and challenge yourself. We can't wait to see students hitting the course this fall!

Please join us in welcoming Alyssa Darby as the new School Counselor serving both Nissitissit Middle School and Hawthorne Brook Middle School!

Alyssa earned her Master's Degree in School Counseling from Fitchburg State University in 2025. Since graduating, she has worked as a school counselor in several districts, including HBMS last fall. She is passionate about helping students build confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and learn life skills that will serve them well beyond middle school.

Outside of school, Alyssa enjoys spending time outdoors, reading a good book, and being with friends and family. She is newly married, has a cat named Mochi, and is the proud aunt of eight nieces and nephews.

Alyssa is looking forward to getting to know students and families this school year and is always happy to connect with parents and caregivers. Welcome to the NMS family, Mrs. Darby!
