Recently, I posted how mortified I was when I would tell parents to “just read more at home” when they asked how they could support their struggling child. But please, read more at home! Did you know the words found in books are more complex than the words used in day-to-day conversation? Kids need exposure to these words! It builds their vocabulary and builds background knowledge. Engage in the story by asking these types of questions:
- Why did (character) do that?
- How do you think (character) feels?
- What do you think is going to happen next?
- What would you have done differently?
- What was (characters) biggest problem?

What is schwa?? “An unstressed mid-central vowel”. Huh?? I have been taught this concept many times, but I still can’t wrap my head around it. And if I don’t get it, then I’m sure my students won’t either. I’m so lucky EBLI doesn’t rely on confusing concepts! Flexing the vowel makes so much more sense and lightens that cognitive load. EBLI for the win!!

I am so lucky I know better - but it didn’t happen overnight. I got my reading endorsement and became a reading interventionist in the public schools. Unfortunately, I still didn’t receive the training I needed to teach all kids how to read. It wasn’t until I started researching on my own that I discovered the Science of Reading. This is when the magic happened. I became certified in Orton-Gillingham, and then EBLI. So thankful for this journey because now I can teach ANYONE to read!
Now hear what our students love about tutoring! These kiddos are simply the best. 🫶🏼
We asked our tutors what their favorite thing is about tutoring! Can you tell we love what we do? 🤗

Yesterday we talked decodables, now let’s talk authentic text! 📚
Who? Everyone! For students that are reading independently and for parents that are reading to children.
When? As soon as they begin to crack the code.
Why? They are enjoyable! They expose children to more complex sentence structures and rich vocabulary.
Swipe to see some favorites from our Once Upon A Time students.

Let’s talk about decodables!
Who? Beginning readers
When? Kindergarten/1st grade
Why? Decodables promote mastery of grapheme/phoneme correspondence. They also allow students to practice blending.
While decodables are essential for early readers, don’t live in decodable land for long! They are boring and non-sensical. They limit exposure to more complex sentence structure.
Great information!

In honor of National Reading Month, check out this incredible student achievement. A story of growing confidence, trust, and perseverance.
In our world, wins can come in many different forms and can look different for each student. This is a WIN for both student and parent. We couldn’t be more proud!

Happy National Reading Month from Once Upon A Time! This month we are reminded just how lucky we are to teach children how to read and ignite a passion for literacy. Let’s celebrate the power of reading all month long - more story time, less screen time!
