Each year, the SIEC conference organizers plan a gala dinner at a venue that helps showcase the culture of our host city. This year, the gala dinner will be held on Amsterdam's Largest Terrace at the Grand Cafe, which first opened in 1874. The Groot Melkhuis began as a farm where the owner, Terant J. Barreveld, sold milk for onsite consumption or as a takeaway. Today, Groot Melkhuis is a place where you can drop in for one coffee and end up staying for hours.

Located in the middle of Vondelpark, guests are invited to grab a seat and make themselves at home. Maria Jourdan from Malta has joined the program for the 97th International Conference in Amsterdam. Her topic is related to sustainability.

Sustainability research within hospitality and business studies is frequently framed as a problem of adoption, implementation, or managerial commitment. Existing studies commonly examine the barriers and drivers influencing whether organisations engage with sustainability initiatives, often if sustainability itself exists as a coherent and stable objective awaiting implementation. This paper challenges that assumption by arguing that sustainability is actively shaped, filtered, and progressively narrowed through organisational decision-making processes.

Maria Randazzo-Davis, Ph.D., VP and Professional Development Chair of SIEC-ISBE is presenting her research on Artificial Intelligence, Ethics, and Cooperation in Business Education at the 97th Annual SIEC Conference in Amsterdam.

Business educators face both opportunities and ethical challenges as artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated into higher education. Artificial intelligence can enhance the quality of learning by providing feedback, explanations, and access to information. However, its unregulated use could undermine students' critical thinking skills, promote academic dishonesty, and hinder personal growth and development. This session reviews the current body of literature on artificial intelligence and higher education, with the goal of identifying strategies for educators to design courses that use artificial intelligence to augment, rather than replace, cognitive engagement and human judgment.

The session views teaching and learning as a mutually supportive relationship between students, faculty, and institutions. The session illustrates how individual decisions made by instructors about their instruction contribute to establishing common expectations for all students regarding educational standards, promoting students' growth and development, and building trust in the learning environment. In addition, the session will focus on fostering cooperative, human-centered learning environments by using transparent, ethically responsible collaborative learning practices in an AI-integrated academic setting.

Theresa Demanuele Montebello has been selected to present on female entrepreneurship at the 97th Annual SIEC Conference in Amsterdam this summer. Her presentation is "Enhancing Female Entrepreneurship in Small Businesses in Malta: Empowering Students through Business Education."

The research area focuses on the important role of business education in empowering students and enhancing female entrepreneurship in small businesses in Malta. The presentation will cover the research background, research aims, the research question, and the research objectives. A brief outline of the literature review will be covered. The research methodology section will cover grounded theory, the methodological stance adopted for this research study. The sampling strategy and the use of MAXQDA as a software tool to organise the data and to present the findings will be included in the presentation. The researcher will present preliminary findings from this study, including recommendations and proposals arising from the qualitative research.

SIEC International is pleased to welcome first-time attendee Luca Refrigeri of Italy to the program. His presentation, titled "Financial Education in Italian Schools: Cross-Curricular Teacher Education for Responsible Economic Citizenship," will explain how Italian schools integrate financial literacy.

Financial literacy is increasingly recognized as a key competence for responsible citizenship in contemporary societies characterized by economic complexity, digital financial environments, and growing interdependence between local and global economic systems. International organizations such as the OECD and the European Commission highlight the importance of equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to make informed financial decisions and to participate responsibly in economic life. Within educational systems, financial education should not be considered solely a domain of economic or business subjects. Rather, it represents a transversal competence that can be developed across multiple disciplines, including mathematics, social sciences, civic education, and the humanities. From this perspective, financial literacy becomes part of a broader educational process aimed at fostering critical thinking, ethical awareness, and responsible decision-making. In Italy, financial education has gradually entered the school system through national initiatives promoted by the Committee for Financial Education and through its integration within Civic Education curricula. However, its effective implementation largely depends on teachers’ preparation and their ability to address financial topics through interdisciplinary approaches. This contribution explores how financial education in the Italian school system can be strengthened through cross-curricular teacher education, enabling teachers of different subjects to integrate financial literacy into their teaching practices and connect economic knowledge with everyday life and civic responsibility. Strengthening interdisciplinary teacher preparation can expand the reach of financial education and support the development of economically informed, responsible citizens capable of navigating complex economic environments.

Technological developments in the labor market and demographic change pose increasing challenges for continuing vocational education and training. Self-directed learning with digital media and online-based continuous training is gaining importance for employees, as it allows flexible learning independent of time and place. The present study draws on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to analyze the factors that influence attitudes towards digital learning in the workplace.
