What’s in a Bird’s Blood? A Hands-On Approach to Avian Hematology
This practical session will guide participants through the preparation and systematic evaluation of avian blood films, with an emphasis on wildlife species. Attendees will learn to identify avian leukocytes, estimate total white blood cell numbers, perform a leukocyte differential, assess thrombocyte numbers, and recognize common blood parasites, including Haemoproteus, Leukocytozoon, and Plasmodium. The session will emphasize a consistent, clinically useful approach that can be applied even when automated cell counts and species-specific reference intervals are unavailable.

Presenter: Francisco O. Conrado, DVM, MSc, DACVP (Clinical)
Dr. Conrado is an Associate Professor in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. He received his veterinary degree and initial clinical pathology training in Brazil and completed additional residency training in clinical pathology at the University of Florida. He is a board-certified veterinary clinical pathologist, serves as Residency Coordinator for the Clinical Pathology Residency Program, and directs the second-year Foundational Clinical Pathology course at Tufts. His clinical and research interests include diagnostic cytology and hematology, the clinical pathology of exotic and wildlife species, interpretation of laboratory data, and the development and validation of emerging diagnostic technologies. Dr. Conrado also chairs the Technology and Innovations Committee of the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ASVCP), where he promotes advances in digital pathology and diagnostic innovation.
