The UWF Archaeology Institute is leading an important preservation effort at Magnolia Cemetery, restoring century-old vernacular grave markers that reflect Pensacola’s early 20th-century African American heritage.
Led by archaeologist Jennifer Melcher, the project is supported by a $50,000 grant from Florida’s Abandoned African American Cemeteries program and focuses on preserving handcrafted markers created by local artisans while honoring the cultural history they represent.
This restoration highlights the importance of safeguarding historic burial sites and the stories they preserve for future generations.
