Many college students find themselves stuck on the five-paragraph essay structure that they learned in high school. Although this framework can help students understand how to begin to structure an argumentative essay, college-level writing provides more room for expansion, and many college students find the five-paragraph structure to be limiting. Unless your professor requires that your essay be five paragraphs, consider basing the structure of your paper around your thesis statement. Each paragraph should be a cohesive unit that functions to support the paper's main claim while building upon the ideas presented in the paragraph prior. Many claims require more than five paragraphs to be fully fleshed out!
