The Academy of American Civic Republicanism exists to revive and bolster active citizenship in the American spirit. Today we honor those brave Americans on Flight 93 who--twenty-five years ago today--summoned the courage and self-sacrifice to "charge the cockpit" and prevent the terrorists from using their plane to destroy the White House, though it meant their certain doom.

We celebrate their demonstration of what James Madison called in Federalist 57, "the vigilant and manly spirit which actuates the people of America—a spirit which nourishes freedom, and in return is nourished by it.”

The Academy of American Civic Republicanism is proud to bring a landmark intellectual confrontation of the 20th century to the stage in Pensacola.

This September, The American Vicarious presents a powerful theatrical reimagining of the historic 1965 Cambridge Union debate between James Baldwin and William F. Buckley Jr. over the resolution: “The American Dream is at the expense of the American Negro.”

Performances will take place September 8–12 at Pensacola State College, the University of West Florida and Old Christ Church.

After 250 years, what is the secret to American civic dynamism?

Join the Academy of American Civic Republicanism at the University of West Florida and Florida International University’s Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom for America at 250: Civic Republicanism, Economic Freedom, and Dynamic Citizenship, a two-day symposium exploring these enduring questions as we commemorate America’s 250th anniversary.

The symposium will feature a keynote address by Robert Luddy, founder and president of CaptiveAire Systems and founder of Thales Academy Schools, along with scholars and business and civic leaders discussing the ideas that continue to shape American civic and economic life.

Happy Fourth of July!

As we celebrate the birth of our nation, we also celebrate the civic virtues that sustain a free republic: patriotism, civic responsibility, prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance.

As we approach America's 250th anniversary, may we renew our commitment to the principles of self-government and the responsibilities of citizenship, preserving the blessings of liberty for future generations.

During Flag Week, we are reminded that keeping a republic depends upon more than elections or institutions alone. It depends upon a shared devotion to principles that transcend faction: liberty, civic responsibility, constitutional government, and the common good.

At its highest meaning, the American flag is not the emblem of a party, but of a people — a symbol of a national inheritance held in common across generations. Especially in divided times, it can remind us that citizenship calls us into a unity deeper than partisan disagreement. To keep a republic requires citizens capable of seeing one another first as fellow heirs to a common civic tradition.

This photograph shows the enormous “Star-Spangled Banner” displayed in the rotunda of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., where the historic flag that inspired Francis Scott Key and the national anthem has long been preserved as one of the defining symbols of the American republic.
