PreK-12 visual arts teachers from ECPS Fine & Performing Arts Department were given the opportunity to participate in a hands-on professional development workshop hosted by a former Escambia Fine Arts teacher turned coffee roaster and entrepreneur, Summer Sevi of Alla Prima Coffee. Friday, November 10th, from 12 pm to 2 pm, at Alla Prima Coffee Roaster, 532 West Garden Street, Pensacola. Teachers were given the opportunity to get rejuvenated and caffeinated as they experiment with exciting new materials and the ways they can use them with their students in the classroom.

Summer Sevi opened up Alla Prima Coffee in 2002 with a mission to fuse coffee and art. Summer, drawing on her love of the arts, hosts art classes in her coffee shop and is hoping to expand by offering more classes in the future. She also supports and provides local artists with a place to display and sell their artwork. Sevi graciously partners with the Escambia County Fine Arts Teachers to host this hands-on educational experience for our hardworking teachers. “It is so important for art teachers to have a community around them of people that understand them. There may only be one art teacher in the whole school so collaborating with people that relate can often be a real challenge. We wanted to present this opportunity to focus on each teacher’s well being while learning new techniques at the same time.” Said ECSD DoDEA Fine Arts Instructional Coach, Christina Martinez. This opportunity has been provided in part by the “All in for the Arts” Grant Awarded to ECPS in 2022.

The workshop will focus on a form of printmaking called Gelli printing. This style of printmaking uses a plate made from gelatin. The paint or ink is rolled out on the gelatin surface. Then the paint or ink is then manipulated on the surface of the gelatin plate using stencils, masks, or other tools. Finally, paper is placed over the top of the surface to transfer the paint onto the paper to make an impression. “Enhancing our current programs with professional learning and fine-tuning a culture of excellence will elevate our students’ Fine Arts experiences in Escambia County Public Schools,” said ECPS Fine Arts and Performing Arts Specialist, Angela Barberi.

This and numerous other professional development opportunities are made possible through, All in for the Arts, a five-year Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) grant awarded in 2022. All In for the Arts, seeks to build a sustainable art ecosystem throughout the county by providing professional development opportunities that empower teachers to champion the arts while gaining effective standards-based strategies.
