Wierman Study Center Many ASL learners get stuck memorizing signs. We teach adults, families & kids real convo skills. I am here to help your family!

At Stellar ASL, we guide you step-by-step from your first signs to real conversations with structured online lessons and supportive community practice. The Wierman Study Center's Homeschool courses offer your child a complete American Sign Language curriculum. There is no need to search the internet for random signs or go crazy looking up grammatical rules! In each lesson, they learn the signs, grammar, and cultural information they need in order to get started signing right away. Each lesson is built around sign, sentence, and conversation goals. These small "smart-goals" keep your child motivated and focused as they make progress. When your child learns ASL with Michelle, they get all the content and support they need to help them learn quickly and correctly! For families with deaf, hard-of-hearing, or nonspeaking children, the Family ASL Support Program is a safe place to learn American Sign Language and grow your communication skills as a family. Whether you are just starting out with ASL, or are working hard to keep up with your school-age child, I want you to succeed. The most important feature of this program is the high level of conversational support it offers. I have worked with deaf, hard-of-hearing, and non-verbal children for almost twenty years. In that time, I have seen again and again the impact of using American Sign Language in the home. By deciding to learn ASL, you are creating a home that is a fully accessible place for your child. One of the biggest signs that your ASL still looks like English?
Using WAY too many “ands.” 👀

A lot of beginner signers assume every English sentence structure has to transfer directly into ASL… but that’s not actually how fluent signing works.

Today, we’re looking at a super common habit that quietly makes signing feel less natural, and how a small shift can instantly make your sentences flow better.

One of the fun things about learning ASL is realizing that there isn’t always just one version of a sign.

You might learn a sign one way and then meet someone from another area who does it completely differently, and they’re both understood just fine.

Today, I’m showing you some common variations you might come across for PARTY, COMPUTER, and even the numbers 16–19.

And this is exactly why I always encourage you to get out into the Deaf community when you can. If you’re wondering which variation you should be using, pay attention to the Deaf people around you and see what’s actually being used in your area.

There’s nothing wrong with discovering that the sign you learned isn’t the one most people around you use. That’s part of learning a living language! 🤟

Here’s one of those little ASL grammar rules that can make a BIG difference when you’re starting out.

You might be tempted to use the sign “don’t” every time you want to make something negative. But with signs like LIKE, WANT, and KNOW, you don’t need to add it.

Why? Because the negative meaning is already built into the sign:

LIKE: DON’T LIKE
WANT: DON’T WANT
KNOW: DON’T KNOW

And there’s another interesting part: sometimes ASL does use NOT for a stronger negation, but the meaning and sentence structure are different.

So if you’ve been adding “don’t” to everything, don’t worry, you’re learning! This is exactly the kind of little grammar detail that starts making ASL feel much more natural as you practice. 🤟

Did you know that the ASL sign you learn for a word might not be the sign everyone uses where you live?

Just like spoken languages have regional words and expressions, ASL has regional variations too. You may come across different signs for the same word depending on the area or Deaf community you’re learning from.

Today, we’re looking at a few different variations for “early” and “pizza” and talking about why you might see one version used more often in one area than another.

And this is one of my favorite things about learning ASL: seeing how the language is actually used by different communities.

So pick one of these signs and ask the Deaf people in your local community which version they use. You might be surprised by what you find! 🤟
