June 5th was a day of both jubilation and sadness. It was Graduation Day for eighth grade and awards recognition for the school. For many of the students, this will possibly be the last day with friends if they are not attending the same high school. Several of our students have chosen to attend Early College on the campus of Robeson Community College. All will start the next phase of their life with a wonderful charge given by Pastor Chris Hunt from Berea Baptist Church who encouraged them to choose good friends, set goals and stay on target, and finally live good moral, disciplined lives. Success will not be determined with the amount of money they earn or the status they achieve. We wish to extend a special thanks to all the parents and friends who attended the program and have supported both the students and staff throughout the year. A full house was evidence of their outstanding support. Stay safe and have a wonderful summer.

There are few things that will be as memorable as Friday, May 23nd for the Girl's Circle at CIS Academy. The girls got to experience Kayaking/Canoeing on the lake at the Lumbee Cultural Center for the first time. After many discussions at the museum on the campus of UNCP, they knew the significance of water to our native people, but experiencing the peace and tranquility, teamship, and natural beauty of the lake and its surroundings brought those lessons into focus. Kayaking was followed with a cook-out prepared by Ms. Nancy. She said that grilling was something she really enjoyed doing and we all agreed that she does it well. The burgers and hotdogs were delicious. Ms. Alicia Thomas and Dr. Nancy Strickland Chavis may know the girls have enjoyed every minute of the program but I want to tell them personally what an awesome influence they have made. Thanks also to Mr. Tyler and Mr. Blake who were unable to attend but were eager to give of their time and talents when needed. I often wonder if those persons who started the Indian Normal School envisioned that one day their influence would ever reach the magnitude that it has. May our girls go forward but never forget to give back so that others may one day benefit as they have.

Today there was a system error that caused NCTest not to function. This was statewide, meaning for all students who were testing this morning. The outage was approximately 40 minutes. Corrective action quickly brought the system back up, and approximately 120,000 students resumed testing. CIS resumed and completed Reading EOGs.

students at CIS Academy were honored today with a super presentation from Animal Cruelty Investigators, Ms. Katherine Floyd and First Sargent L. Holman from the Robeson County Sheriff’s Department. They were informed of the various types of animal cruelty that have been reported and investigated in the
county. Many of the students were surprised and devastated by some of the types that were shared. Several students were chosen to demonstrate how to react if you were attacked by an animal such as a large dog. Ways to keep your pet safe were part of the discussion: proper food and water, timely visits to the vet to receive shots and check-ups, and very importantly showing them that they are loved.

Mr. Holman also shared information on how the students can become involved in the county animal shelter located in Saint Paul’s. They are able to volunteer with a parental waiver. This would be a great start to a career that involved working with animals.

Thanks for the interesting and informative information we learned on how to stay safe and also better care for an important part of our world, the creatures we love. This is not just cats and dogs, but birds, horses, cows, and even wild animals in our environment.

Young Author Celebration was held at CIS Academy on May 13th. The celebration included both County and State Winners who had written selections on the Theme: A Beacon of Light. Speaker for the evening was Mr. Edward Reed, local author. Mr. Reed has published six books. He graciously gave each student an autographed copy of his book, Badge. Mr. Reed is also a math teacher at Saint Paul's High School. We look forward to hearing about all the future success from our students as they continue to write. We also extend a special thanks to the parents, family, and friends who came to support and offer encouragement.

If May showers bring Spring flowers, then we are in full bloom at CIS Academy. Our students are super busy completing projects, preparing for competitions, and preparing for graduation. Through all of this, three students stand out. Chosen for student of the month are Wanda Bryant, 6th grade; Yolanda Martinez, 7th grade; and Jacoby Sanderson, 8th grade. Congratulations on jobs well done, and continue the great work.
