• Had to Repost this amazing info. from the one and only who explains:
“ Not very many aircraft were constructed of mahogany wood and given a clear coat like a vintage Chris Craft boat, but the rare Langley Twin was one.
It’s a real shame so few photos of it…color photos in particular…exist, as it looked truly magnificent among the aluminum and fabric that makes up the majority of the world’s aircraft.
But it wasn’t crafted out of wood for beauty’s sake - when it was built in 1940, the US was attempting to conserve as much metal as possible for the war effort.
As an alternative, designers Martin Jensen and Arthur Draper chose mahogany impregnated with resins - not unlike modern carbon fiber airframes.
The overall airframe configuration was quite unique, as well.
While there are plenty of low-wing twin engine designs, most incorporate retractable landing gear, controllable-pitch propellers, and are larger than a Cessna 150.
The Langley, however was a strange and diminutive airplane with a length of just over 20 feet (6.3m) and a wingspan of only 35 feet (10.7m).
Beautiful as it was, the performance must have been positively horrid - it was provided with two Franklin 4AC four-cylinder engines that produced only 65hp each.
With this amount of power, the airplane was expected to carry four adults.
Moreover, it was expected to maintain altitude with four adults onboard in the event of an engine failure, all while dragging the fixed landing gear and the failed, non-featherable propeller through the air… “ [ for more, pls visit original post 😊 ]
