Swan update #2: Viejito has early stage botulism and no fractures. He's being treated at Flamingo Gardens and we're awaiting final approval for him to remain a permanent resident so we can visit him whenever we want. ❤️
Swan Update: Our injured swan is actually a super senior citizen with cataracts and an old beak injury. He's safe with Flamingo Gardens and being given fluids. They will give him a full exam tomorrow. If his injuries can be rehabilitated and he's cleared of avian flu, he will be allowed to remain as a permanent resident of Flamingo Gardens in their lake area, where he will be fed daily and won't have to fend for himself. So here's praying all goes well with his rehab efforts. We were also allowed to name him, so he's now "Viejito", which translates to old man. 🦢❤️
After teaching Entrepreneurship and Finance at the park, we came across an injured swan on the way home. We pulled over, called the AMAZING Anabella Hauck (our local wildlife rescuer) and while we waited for her to come save the day, we helped corral the swan out of the street. However, to our surprise another angry beast-mode swan came up from out of the lake to attack this poor guy (bit and sat on him). I couldn't get a picture (but posted a sample pic of what he looked like) because I dropped my phone to use my jacket to "shoo" him away and get the other swan to another yard, but it was scary up close (and yes, I know it's nature but dang...) Luckily, Anabella and her support team got to us within 20-30 minutes, caught the swan that we were keeping next to a house out of the lake and the street, and are now taking him to Flamingo Gardens to get examined by their vet. Our first time participating in a swan rescue felt surreal but fulfilling....
