A Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is earned through years of showing up, learning, and putting your skills to work on the mats.

Promotion takes more than knowing a list of techniques. It means demonstrating a deep understanding of escapes, submissions, positional control, and self-defense. It takes the ability to stay calm under pressure, solve problems while someone is resisting, and keep going when you’re tired. It also takes time: years of solid training at rank to build those skills and prove they’re yours.

The standard is challenging, and that’s what makes reaching it so meaningful. Every class, every tough round, and every small improvement adds up.

Special thanks to Professor Darren DeSalvo (4th degree BJJ black belt) for his guidance and evaluation during our recent promotions.

We had a great Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu workshop today at Triumph Martial Arts in Pella! 🥋

Professor Darren DeSalvo broke down guard passes and side control escapes, then connected the techniques in a submission flow that gave everyone something new to work on. Plenty of drilling, great questions, and a lot of progress on the mats.

Thank you, Professor DeSalvo, for sharing your expertise, and thanks to everyone who came out to train!
