How Families Can Support Learning at Home

At the YWCA Early Learning Center, we know that families are a child’s first and most important teachers. Learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door—simple, everyday moments at home can make a big difference in your child’s growth and confidence.

Here are a few easy ways to support learning at home:

Talk, talk, talk!
Have conversations throughout the day—during meals, bath time, or while running errands. Ask open-ended questions and encourage your child to share their thoughts.

Reading together every day
Reading builds language, imagination, and a love of learning. Let your child choose books, point to pictures, and talk about the story together.

Create routines
Predictable routines help children feel safe and ready to learn. Consistent times for meals, play, reading, and sleep support healthy development.

Learn through play
Play is how young children learn best. Drawing, building, pretend play, singing, and outdoor play all support problem-solving, creativity, and social skills.

Encourage independence
Let your child try things on their own, like putting on shoes or helping clean up. These moments build confidence and important life skills.

Stay connected with teachers
Share questions, observations, and successes with your child’s teachers. Working together helps us support your child’s learning both at school and at home.
