Stewart Clouse

Stewart Clouse I’ve been called a wizard, robot, cyborg, calculator, encyclopedia, Rain-man, and mathemagician.

I don’t know about all that, but I do love learning and explaining things in ways people may not have thought about before.

If you’ve never seen it, you should check out a Ted Talk by Allan Savory. He explains how to reverse desertification with the use of grazing animals. He did it on the African plains and we can do it here. It involves the rotational movement of animals through the land to match the grass cycle. You can start on a very small scale, too. Happy grazing.

Fun fact: The earth you stand on has an electric field. The ground and atmosphere act like charged metal plates in their interactions. The electric potential is higher as you go up in the atmosphere (meaning particles at higher altitude are more highly charged) The potential increases by about 100 volts every meter you go up. This is because of a downward electric current from the upper atmosphere. If you’re standing on the ground the potential is zero because you’re literally grounded. To find the voltage at a given height simply take the height in meters times 100.

You know, if I had a nickel for every time someone gave me a nickel, then I would have n nickels, where n represents the number of nickels I had been given.

Did you know that the legendary rock band TOOL used the numbers and patterns of the fibonacci sequence to help create their song “Lateralus”? (See comments if you want to hear the song.) Not only do the syllables in each line match the sequence, but even time signatures and transition points in the song can be seen to match. Beyond this, the lyrics speak of growing, reaching out beyond, and swinging on a spiral. This refers to the golden ratio from this sequence and it is also in the sacred geometry of the flower of life which all growth in nature exhibits.

The Fibonacci sequence is a very simple, elegant pattern that can be used to model many things in nature. See if you can figure out how it’s generated. What’s the next number..?

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, …

It’s back to school time! If your kiddo is stressed about their math classes already, don’t panic, a lot of people struggle with math. There’s nothing wrong with your child. Math can be difficult, but if they can get a solid foundation it *will* come together for them. If you want help, I have 5 weekly in-person tutoring slots and 5 weekly virtual slots open for the semester. Once these spots are full, I will only have limited one time spots available as our schedule allows.

To find out if this will be a good fit and get signed up, use this link to schedule a free 15 min call:

Did you ever see the movie “Good Will Hunting “ with Matt Damon and Robin Williams? It’s about a one-in-a-billion, mathematical genius who befriends a professor. The movie is loosely based on this man, Ramanujan, who says that while he slept a goddess would unroll scrolls of mathematical equations and reveal their meaning. His contributions to mathematics are truly unique. His discoveries are still being studied and used after 200 years.

This is so true. Algebra converts large sentences into symbols to make them easy to work with. The point of math is to simplify, not complicate.

Bingo. This is one of the reasons I think Statistics is one of the most important math classes you can take. Everyday we hear stats about all kinds of things, but without understanding them we don’t really know what they mean or how valuable the information is.
