A question we get all the time:

"I can probably only train 2x a week — is that enough?"

That's actually the wrong question to ask.

Frequency isn't what determines whether an athlete gets good. Someone who trains 4x a week for two months and disappears ends up well behind someone who trained 2x a week for a year. Not slightly behind — substantially.

Frequency is a multiplier. Duration is what's being multiplied.

There's more to it than that — why spacing sessions out actually helps, what separates two athletes taking the exact same class, and the real reason people quit (it's almost never because they stopped enjoying it).

"Matt is an outstanding coach. The only gym I’ve felt a personal connection with a coach who actually cares about me reaching my goals. A friendly environment where you WILL get BETTER every single session. I recommend No Limits Grappling Academy to every single person no matter the experience level."- Nick A.

Three weeks.

Nick was only here for a short time. Three weeks — and that’s all it took for him to feel what we’re building.

Not a year. Not after a new belt. Three weeks, and he understood that this isn’t about selling memberships or handing out techniques.

It’s about actually caring whether the person in front of you gets where they’re trying to go.

That’s the whole thing. That’s always been the whole thing, and it always will be. 🦍

It's not always about the time people put in, it's about the time you put into people

Thank you, Nick. You’re always welcome here!

"We love NLGA. The improvements I've seen in my son in the last 3 months is amazing. Coach Matt keeps these kids on their toes and is constantly challenging them to be the best they can be."
— Allison V.

This is exactly what we're going for
Three months. Real, visible improvement. Not because anyone went easy on him — because he got challenged, pushed, and held to a standard the entire way.
That doesn't change whether you're an adult or a teenager. Everyone who walks through this door gets coached the same way. Real attention. Real expectations. Real development.
Thank you, Allison. So proud of the work Mason's putting in.

Strong showing for the Silverbacks at the Good Fight Scranton Scramble.

The day started with Mason Veina earning a silver medal in his jiu-jitsu tournament debut! Only two months and some change into training with us. Mason has shown the type of dedication, hunger to learn, and work ethic that make him a perfect fit at NLGA

Billy Costner went 1-1 giving up 60 pounds to his opponent and still took it to overtime. That’s not a loss. That’s grit, poise, and tenacity on full display.

Mike Wahlers went 0-2 in his first ever grappling tournament. And his second match looked nothing like his first. That growth in real time — that’s exactly what this is about.

But the moment of the day belongs to Brian Porcello.

0-2 in his first tournament performance. GOLD today.

I’m not always the easiest coach to train under. I demand a lot — in understanding, in ex*****on, in standards. I challenge these athletes constantly.

And they meet it. Every. Single. Time.

To say I’m proud is an understatement.

The best part?

We’re just getting started.

I've had an amazing experience training here. From day one, the atmosphere has been incredibly positive and welcoming, making it easy for practitioners of all experience levels to feel comfortable and supported. Whether you're stepping onto the mats for the first time or have years of experience, everyone is treated with respect and encouraged to grow.

One thing that really stands out is the depth and quality of the instruction. The classes go far beyond just teaching techniques—they provide detailed breakdowns of the fundamental systems of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and explain how everything connects together. This approach helps students build a strong foundation while also developing a deeper understanding of the art.

The training partners are fantastic as well. The room is full of skilled practitioners who are always willing to help, share knowledge, and push each other to improve in a positive way. The culture that has been built here makes training both challenging and enjoyable.

Most importantly, Head Coach Matt genuinely cares about every student who walks through the door. He gives individual attention, takes the time to answer questions, and is invested in helping each person reach their goals. His passion for teaching and commitment to his students is evident in every class. If you're looking for a place to learn high-level Jiu-Jitsu in a supportive and welcoming environment, I can't recommend this academy enough.- Kevin C.

The second installment in our “Friends of NLGA” blog series is live.
In this series, we spotlight local businesses who’ve been influential in helping our team grow and continue pushing us toward success.

Everyone knows that in grappling, things like technique, strength, and “the grind” get all the praise — but some of the most overlooked pieces of the puzzle are overall health and recovery.

Thankfully, we’ve got our friends at Happy Health & Wellness Scranton in our corner.

We're kicking off a new series here on the NLGA blog called Friends of NLGA — a chance to spotlight some of the businesses and people in the area who have been influential in helping our team grow and continue to push us toward bigger and better things. To say that this first feature hits close to home would be an understatement. It's the area's premier destination for strength and athletic training, and our next-door neighbors — NEPA Fit Club
