October is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness Month 🗣️✨

AAC encompasses every tool a person uses to communicate when speech isn't their primary or only way to express themselves. This includes everything from high-tech speech-generating devices and apps to low-tech options like picture boards, gestures, and sign language.

Communication is how we connect, share our needs, express our personalities, and advocate for ourselves. When we support AAC, we are removing barriers and ensuring that every voice, no matter how it is produced, is heard and valued.

How can you be an ally to AAC users?
✅ Be patient. Give the person plenty of time to process and formulate their message.
✅ Presume competence. Always assume the person has something to say and the capacity to communicate it.
✅ Respect the tool. An AAC device is a person's voice; never touch or move it without permission.
✅ Listen with your whole heart. Focus on the message, not the method.

Let's celebrate the diverse ways we communicate and work together to create a world where everyone has the tools they need to be heard. 💙

😭❤️ THIS. THIS RIGHT HERE. THIS IS WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT.

I need to shout one of our Learn with Lex girls out from the ROOFTOPS today because my heart could absolutely BURST with pride. 🥹

This little girl noticed that a peer at school was sitting alone because of their differences. And instead of walking by, ignoring it, or assuming someone else would handle it… SHE DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

She went directly to her principal to make sure that someone would sit with that student so they wouldn’t have to be alone. Also, shoutout to the school for helping her advocate! ❤️

LET THAT SINK IN.

A CHILD recognized that another child deserved kindness, friendship, and inclusion — and she used her voice to make sure it happened.

THAT is leadership. THAT is empathy. THAT is inclusion.

At Learn with Lex, we work so hard to teach our kids that differences are not something to fear, that everyone deserves a seat at the table, and that even the smallest voices can make the BIGGEST difference.

And today, one of our girls proved exactly that.

I don’t care about perfect grades, trophies, or awards nearly as much as I care about raising and supporting children who see someone sitting alone and decide to do something about it.

You didn’t just make sure someone had a place to sit. You made sure someone knew they mattered.

And THAT is something worth celebrating.

I am SO unbelievably proud of you, sweet girl. Never, ever stop being the person who stands up for others. The world needs more hearts like yours. ❤️

Inclusion isn’t just something we teach. It’s something our kids are taking out into the world.

And THAT is why we do what we do. 🌈

Halloween crafts bring a little extra magic to the school day! From silly bats and friendly ghosts to paper pumpkins and spooky classroom decorations, students can let their imaginations shine while creating something fun to display. 👻

Halloween should be fun for everyone, but candy isn’t an option for every child. We make sure to offer a few non-food alternatives alongside candy: stickers, glow sticks, pencils, bubbles, temporary tattoos, bookmarks, or small toys. This allows the kids to choose without making a fuss. 🤗

A little flexibility can make Halloween more welcoming for everyone. 🧙🏻‍♀️🧛🏼‍♀️

Miss Lex and Miss Livvy completed the Steamtown Marathon yesterday! A beautiful (and wet) course beginning at Forest City High School and ending in downtown Scranton! Thank you to the families who supported us, left us sweet messages, and even came out in the rain to cheer! We love you! 🏃‍♀️🫶🏼

🎃 Pumpkin carving is more than a fun fall tradition! 👻

It’s a chance to get creative, spend quality time together, and make something uniquely yours. Scooping, sketching, and carving can also help kids practice coordination and problem-solving, while turning an ordinary pumpkin into a festive decoration. Pick a design, put on some music, and enjoy making a little autumn magic! 👩🏻‍🎨
