The barn is filled with little chirps as we had 150 baby broiler chicks arrive to raise for the Michigan FFA Broiler Contest! Students utilize this project as a competitive research study where they analyze and experiment with feed additives to grow the largest broilers the fastest. They are given 5 weeks to raise these birds before the big state competition. Students collect daily and weekly data to compare against their classmates. Let’s wish them luck as they care for their birds throughout the next few weeks.

In September we partnered with Sanilac County Farm Bureau to provide over 25 volunteers to put on Project R.E.D.! Our students volunteered as tour guides, the mascot Captain Corn, our very own Small Animal Station, and helped with lunch coordination. Each volunteer helped educate fourth graders on local agriculture while serving their local schools and Farm Bureau.

Check out this cool recipe that our very own Grace Conlee made for our topic this month! She made these muffins using the Sanilac FFA’s honey and put her gluten free twist on it! Let us know if you would try them! Here’s the recipe:

2 cups (280 g) all purpose gluten free flour blend

1 teaspoon xanthan gum, (omit if your blend already contains it)

¾ cup (6 fluid ounces) milk, at room temperature

Gluten vs. Gluten-Free Processed Foods: It’s not always a simple swap! While gluten-free options are essential for those with celiac disease or sensitivities, many processed GF foods can still be high in sugar, unhealthy fats, and refined starches. Always check those labels! Michigan Farm Bureau

This year we decided to compete in the Speak AG Challenge hosted by Michigan Farm Bureau! Enjoy our first post for September where we educate the public of topics related to food processing. 🥕🍎 Beyond the Label: Let’s Talk About Food Processing! 🍎🥕
“Processed” doesn’t automatically mean “bad.” In fact, most of the food we eat has been processed in some way—from washing and cutting fruits and vegetables to freezing, canning, pasteurizing, or turning ingredients into the foods we enjoy every day.
Food processing can help make food safer, more convenient, affordable, nutritious, and available year-round. The important thing is to look beyond sensational claims and learn what is actually in the food we are choosing.
So the next time you see a claim like “all-natural,” “unprocessed,” or “ultra-processed,” take a moment to ask: What does that really mean? What does the nutrition label tell me? And how was this food made?
This month, we’re exploring the journey from farm → processing → grocery store → plate and learning how processing plays a role in the food choices we make every day. 🌽🥛🍞
Let’s move beyond the headlines and have conversations based on facts!

We would like to say thank you to everyone who came out and volunteered in the Miracle of Life Barn this week! The week wouldn’t be such a success without you!

This year we had 13 calves, 10 piglets, and 4 kids(baby goats) born in the barn.
