In case you did not hear yesterday, we are saddened to share that Mrs. Massey has passed away.

Mrs. Massey was a kind, patient, and deeply dedicated band director who taught at Berry Miller Junior High for many years. Many of the talented students who came through the Dawson cluster began their musical journey under her guidance and care.

Her quiet strength and love for teaching helped build the foundation of what became a strong and successful band program at Dawson. She not only developed young musicians’ skills but also nurtured their confidence, character, and love for music.

Those of us who had the privilege of working with her or teaching her students know the lasting impact she made, both in and beyond the classroom.

Please keep your thoughts and prayers with her family, friends, and everyone whose life she touched during this difficult time.

I hope you're doing well and staying safe. Unfortunately, there is some sad news I wanted to share with you. Mrs. Nancy Caston passed away peacefully in her home yesterday with Mr. Caston by her side.

Many of you were taught by Mrs. Caston and I'm sure you can recall her kind, loving, and unique teaching style that simply brought a smile to your face each and every time you were with her. When she was at South JH, she was one of the main reasons the brand new Dawson Band program was successful so early on in 2007! She would help the program in rehearsals but also helped steer us towards success behind the scenes with her in-depth knowledge and unique love of music. Without Mrs. Caston, the Dawson Band program would not have been what it was and what it is today. In my opinion, "you're only as good as the foundation that was provided before you" and Mrs. Caston was that foundation that brought success to her students and the community.

She will be deeply missed and we are thankful for the positive influence she had on all of us.

The following is from Mr. Caston, posted yesterday (Tuesday).

"To all of Nancy's friends, colleagues, and former students - Nancy passed away this morning after a long struggle with Lewy Body Dementia. She was here at home with me and her passing was peaceful. She was a wonderful wife, an outstanding teacher, and friend. She took great pride in her students' achievements and sustained a love for each one. She leaves a legacy of instilling a love of music in all of "her kids". There will be a family memorial for Nancy at some point in the future. Best to all.

Robby Caston"

I wanted to let you know that the band world lost a legend early this morning. For the current and past band students who can remember, Mr. Green was an integral part of our program's success that goes back to the first year of the school's opening in 2007. When Mr. Green would stop by to give one of his band clinics, he instantly made us all better! Although he was soft spoken, would be nit picky until we got things right, and had other admirable characteristics that made him memorable for all the right reasons, he consistently guided us in the right direction to make a lasting impact on the program. He showed us that we had it within us to be incredible people and incredible musicians to move and inspire our audience. Before and after each rehearsal he would always brag about how amazing the program was but specifically shared how proud he was of our students. We are forever grateful for his contribution. RIP Mr. Green.

In honor of teacher appreciation week, please let us know how you are doing! What year did you graduate (if applicable), what city do you currently live in, what career path did you choose, are you still playing your instrument or spinning that flag or rifle? We would love to hear from everyone and perhaps share your favorite Dawson Marching Band show or HS band experience? It's hard to imagine Dawson opened 13 YEARS AGO but time really goes by fast!

We hope all is well and stay safe out there! 😊

There have been many requests for this page, from past graduates to look back at photos and reconnect with other alumni. What a great historical record. Enjoy.

Dawson Band Family,

I sincerely hope this email finds you doing well. I am writing with a heavy heart and partial tears in my eyes to announce that after 11 years, I made the personal decision to step down and will not be returning as the Director of Bands at Dawson High School. I have been extremely lucky and honored to be a part of something so special, meaningful, and unique that I refer to as my family. Through building and maintaining the success of the program, I have grown personally and professionally because of what we created together as a team. I am thankful and grateful for all the memories you have given me and what you have taught me. I will use our experiences for the next chapter of my life and career to continue helping and serving others. I am also looking forward to watching the Dawson Band & Catalyst Color Guard grow and continue the highest standard of success!

Parents: As always thank you for believing in me! Thank you for your trust, your kindness, and your confidence in me to push and motivate your child to meet or exceed their potential. We literally could not have accomplished anything without YOU. The hours of personal sacrifice to benefit and build the program is surreal but you always believed in our purpose and what we stood for. From the bottom of my heart, thank you and I literally appreciate all of you! Please feel free to keep in touch!

Students: You know I can “talk” or type in this section all day long but I will try my hardest to keep it brief since the tears are literally rolling down my cheeks right now. First, I love each and every single one of you. You inspired me and provided the motivation for me to get up each and every day to drive across town to serve you, teach you, mentor you, and learn from you. You mean the world to me and I appreciate your work ethic, your respect, your trust and so much more! You will always have a place in my heart and I look forward to seeing all the great things you will continue to accomplish in high school, in college, and beyond! Keep working hard to maintain and finish what we started! If you are going into music or simply want to keep in touch, you are more than welcome to do so!

Due to the unique timing of things, if you have any photos that you don’t mind sharing with me, I would appreciate it. It can be anything you would like to share and it would mean a lot. Simply send a message through the Dawson Band page. Also for those in town, I will see if something in Pearland can be coordinated this week (maybe Wednesday or Thursday) so I can thank you in person. If so, you are all invited.

The Dawson Band will continue to be successful and to be known across the state and beyond! I look forward to seeing your accomplishments! Go Eagles!

Sincerely Yours,

Ryan Agard
