Participation in local, state, and national elections is an important way to ensure that the voices of healthcare professionals are heard in the public policy process. Another Grand Rounds in the books!

This past week, we had the pleasure of listening to our Program Director, Dr. John Norton, give a lecture on the presentation of headaches, differential diagnoses, and treatment regimens!

We appreciate the information taught and are now better prepared to handle unusual neurological findings that may come about while in practice. Thanks again, Dr. Norton, for a wonderful presentation! 🧠

We are thrilled to celebrate Dr. Lee and Dr. Bohl as they both matched into Child & Adolescent Psychiatry fellowships at Prisma Health and University of South Alabama respectively. Your dedication to advancing mental health care for young patients is truly inspiring, and we know you will make a lasting impact.

At the same time, we proudly congratulate Dr. Fitz-Gerald, Dr. Bulchandani, and Dr. DePasquale as they completed their training and begin the next chapter of their lives at their respective attending jobs in Lynchburg, VA; Mobile, AL; and Phoenix, AZ! Your hard work, compassion, and commitment to patient care will undoubtedly serve your communities well.

Last week, we celebrated Mississippi State Hospital Day by bringing joy to our patients through games, laughter, and great food! From friendly competition to shared meals, the smiles said it all.

We also had the privilege of hosting a special Grand Rounds presentation by Dr. Patrick Weldon on movement disorders, highlighting the importance of understanding the connection between neurological and psychiatric care. Opportunities like this help us continue to grow, learn, and provide the best care possible for our patients.

This past week, we had the opportunity to hear from one of our fourth year residents, Dr. Patrick Fitz-Gerald, for Grand Rounds! His topic included mental health as it is portrayed in the media.

Psychiatrists in the media are often portrayed as distant, overly clinical, or even unethical—reinforcing outdated stereotypes that can erode trust in mental health care. In reality, psychiatry is rooted in empathy, collaboration, and evidence-based treatment.

As psychiatry residents, we were taught to actively challenge these stigmas by building strong therapeutic relationships with our patients and engaging in open conversations about mental health care regarding its therapeutic outcomes.

Stepping away from the hospital and into the field 🎯

Our residents traded scrubs for paintball gear and spent the day recharging, bonding, and embracing a little friendly competition. Between the laughter, teamwork, and adrenaline-filled moments, it was the perfect reminder that taking time to connect outside of work strengthens our camaraderie together as a program!

Wellness isn’t just a concept—it’s a priority. Grateful for a group that shows up for each other on and off the clock. 💥

Shoutout to Dr. William Kujawski and Dr. Patrick Fitz-Gerald on serving as Doctors of the Day! This role involves providing medical services for the state legislature as well as staff at the state capitol. In addition, our residents were able to experience the firsthand proceedings that play a role in the Mississippi Legislature. Thank you both for your service throughout the day!

We had the pleasure of hearing from Dr. Michael DePasquale this week for grand rounds! Dr. DePasquale, an upcoming graduate, presented his topic on Psychiatry in the geriatric population.

His presentation covered screening tests regarding the six domains of cognitive functioning, underlying medical causes that can mimic psychiatric symptoms, and ECT studies on appropriate treatment strategies for this patient group. As always, we were excited to hear from one of our own residents take the opportunity to teach and further enhance the learning experience within our program!
