"Don't worry, daddy is always going to protect you, no matter what.”
I wish that was true.
But it isn't.
It's a lie.
I am only human and so are my kids.
I will do all I can to protect them when they are with me.
But they are not always with me.
Are your kids always with you?
Someday, they may have to protect themselves.
Will they know how?
Possibly?
I prefer to work toward definitely, and reluctantly accept probably.
Too confusing?
That’s too bad.
"Don't worry, I will protect you no matter what" is one of the biggest well intentioned lies ever told.
I have been training in the Martial Arts for more than 40 years, and I still cannot protect myself "no matter what", and, whether you know it or not, neither can you.
So why should we bother with the Martial Arts if it doesn't make us invincible?
Nothing makes us invincible, and that is the first lesson in self-defense.
We are not immortal, invincible, or indestructible.
But helplessness, hopelessness, uselessness, and worthlessness are unnecessary and unacceptable alternatives.
When we take care of ourselves, respect our bodies, avoid danger and destruction, and live our lives responsibly, we feel better.
Much better.
If your diet is unhealthy, you are unhealthy.
If you do not train your body effectively, your body is ineffective.
My children are growing up in the Dojo, surrounded by people who I know and trust.
They will learn how to protect themselves within their fullest potential.
I will see to it, because I will not always be there for them.
One day I will be gone.
Spoiler alert…
The future is coming for every one of us.
Nobody is getting out of here alive.
That’s an inconvenient truth.
In the meantime, my kids are going to learn that they aren’t helpless, hopeless, useless, or worthless.
I owe them that.
They are going to become sturdy and self-reliant.
If they cannot rely on themselves, they definitely cannot rely on each other.
That is unacceptable.
Can you really protect yourself if you were assaulted?
If not, you won’t be capable of protecting anyone else, either.
That’s another inconvenient truth.
You may be willing to die for someone, but living for yourself and for those who you love, is a much better choice.
If you really want to be sure that you and your loved ones can protect yourselves, shouldn’t you learn how?
Nobody ever regrets learning how to defend themselves.
Is it really worth it?
You’ll have to decide.
