Aloha LeewardCC students!
We hope that you are having a fun and adventurous summer! It is almost the end of the summer break, but it is not too late to go on an exciting adventure!
The Pelagic Shark Dive Tour on Haleiwa, a town located on the Northshore of O‘ahu, provides an experience that allows you to swim amongst the sharks! After about a 40-minute drive from Leeward Community College, you will arrive at the Haleiwa Small Boat Harbor where your tour will begin!
The tour is approximately 2 hours long, and to ensure that you exhibit safe habits around the sharks, there will be a tour guide with you throughout the entire process. Aside from being able to swim alongside the sharks, you will also learn a lot of fun facts about them as well as their importance to our ecosystem!
Swimming in the wild with the sharks is such an exciting experience and we recommend anyone seeking an adventure to go and give it a try!

Going to the Honolulu Zoo!
🐻
Aloha!
It is Yushin, a volunteer at the International Office.
This time I would like to introduce the Honolulu Zoo that I visited with my host family. The zoo is located next to Kapiolani Park on the east end of Waikiki. There are about 900 different kinds of animals that reside there! I was excited to see many of those cute animals. Besides the endemic species in Hawai`i, there are also some species of animals that are from Africa. One animal that I really enjoyed watching was the Komodo Dragons. I was so happy to see the Komodo Dragons as they are hard to find at the zoos in Japan. I was grateful to be able to see animals from all over the world here in Honolulu. If you are into animals, Honolulu Zoo offers volunteer and internship opportunities for students!!

Aloha!
My name is Yushin, and I’m a volunteer at the Office of International Programs! I would like to introduce my ESL class (English as a Second Language). My ESL class is probably one of my favorite classes! There are a variety of students from all over the world! Countries like: Japan, Korea, China, Philippines, Brazil, Chile, and so much more!
Check out the photos taken during the class. We had so much fun playing quiz games. Through this fun, but educational activity, we learned how to quote and cite from various sources. Working with other students is the best way to practice your English!!✨

Aloha🌺 My name is Yushin. I’m an international student from Japan and a volunteer of the Office of International Program. I went hiking with other international students to Makapu’u Point Lighthouse trail.
I had an amazing time and here’s how it went. We went to the trail by chartered school bus. In Japan, we don’t normally use school buses so it was very exciting for me! (Someone seems to be sleeping…) International students also study so hard and get tired. But this hike made us feel refreshed and forget about all of our worries! We could feel the balmy breeze and see absolutely amazing views under the fine weather so all of the tiredness was gone. By the way, have you ever seen a lighthouse? It was my first time seeing a lighthouse. It looked tiny and cute from our hiking course.
It was a really fun and memorable experience. I was able to talk with other international students and get along with them. I can’t wait for the next activity that The Office of International Programs will hold!!

Waiola Shave Ice is one of Hawaii’s first shave ice stores to open in Waikiki. Waiola Shave Ice has been in business since 1940 and serves fluffy shave ice made of quality syrup that melts in your mouth. One of the popular combos is the “Obama Rainbow” a trio of cherry, lemon-lime, and passion fruit flavors that Barack Obama ordered during his first visit here as president. Waiola Shave Ice is located approximately 25 minutes away from Leeward CC. If you are visiting the Waikiki area, Waiola Shave Ice is a must stop!

Aloha, this is Keitaro from the Office of International Programs. One of the places I like to visit to purchase groceries is Sam's Club. Sam's Club is a membership retail store that sells bulk items at a cheaper price compared to other retailers. It carries many items that cannot be found on the mainland, such as local fish, snacks, and local-grown vegetables. If you need to purchase groceries or other items, Sam’s Club is a convenient place to shop because it is only 3 minutes away (by car) from Leeward CC.

We are back once more! 👋 Three of our exchange students from our partner school in Japan, University of Niigata Prefecture, visited The Pearl alongside our International Student Advisor. We were able to enjoy a delicious full-course meal with the help of our Culinary Arts faculty and students.
Although they have only been on the island for a few weeks, their transition as students at Leeward CC has been great. In their classes, they enjoy having discussions with other international students. Through those interactions, they are able to sharpen their English and communication skills.

Aloha everyone! Happy Kamehameha Day!
Kamehameha day honors the monarch who united and ruled the islands of Hawai’i, King Kamehameha I (a.k.a Kamehameha the Great). Usually, a floral parade takes place consisting of hundreds of people gathered from all over. There’s also the 🌺 Lei Draping Ceremony where people gather to witness the statue of King Kamehameha I with beautiful leis. The statue is located in front of Aliʻiōlani Hale in downtown Honolulu.

This week, we will be hosting a short-term group from Indiana. One of the main reasons why these students decided to come to Hawai’i was their interest in learning more about Japanese language & culture. Because they couldn’t go to Japan, we thought this would be a great opportunity to host this program here on Oahu because Hawai’i is known for its diverse culture, rich history, & unique traditions. We believe their stay here will inspire them to learn more about Japanese and Hawaiian culture. We have planned many fun-educational activities for them both on and off-campus.

One of the most beautiful yet dangerous beaches on Oahu is Ehukai Beach Park. This beach is located in Pupukea (North shore of Oahu) and is often referred to as the Banzai Pipeline. Away from the city's traffic you can find big waves, and witness surfing competitions there. In the winter time the waves can reach as high as 20 feet when combined with strong winds and currents. Although these conditions are perfect for a surfing competition, swimmers should be cautious at all times.

Aloha 🤙, this is Keitaro from the Office of International Programs. One of my favorite food courts to visit is the Pearl Highlands Center. It's fairly close to Leeward CC (5 minutes by car) making it an ideal place to grab a quick lunch.
The Pearl Highlands Center has been recently renovated and now offers a variety of shops and restaurants for everyone's taste. The shopping center offers a variety of entertainment, dining, and shopping options including Regal Cinemas, 24-Hour Fitness, Ross Dress For Less, Sam’s Club, Ulta and Buffalo Wild Wings.

Aloha, this is Mai from the Office of International Programs. Today, I will share my favorite beach in Hawai'i.
Hawai'i is a unique place to travel, not only to study, but also to explore. The islands are know for their crystal clear water and white sand beaches. My favorite beach is Bellows and it is located on the east side of Oahu island. During weekdays, Bellows is used as a military training ground, however it is accessible to the public on weekends and national holidays. I like going to Bellows beach because it's less crowded compared to more touristy spots, and it has all necessary amenities and a beautiful view.
