Swinging into the first day of school like…

⭐️ Seeing old friends and meeting some new
🍃 Two hours outside
💪🏼 Lunch and a Taido class
🍿 Movie to celebrate an achieved goal from last year
💙 And introducing our new school mascot - baby Luke! He joined our family in April and is the reason school looks a bit different this year - welcome to our community classroom!

The goal was never an Ivy League bumper sticker. It’s a young person who knows who they are and what they’re capable of.

How to discover and nurture their gifts and talents. And how to use those gifts to find a calling and live a purposeful life.

It may be an Ivy League college but they will know why they chose it before applying - not Sophomore year when they have to declare a major. They have apprenticed with a [nurse, teacher, engineer] and this college is the best.

Or maybe they will choose entrepreneurship and start a business. After creating one every year at Acton they will have quite a bit of experience.

Maybe they have learned they do best working with their hands and will lean into trade school.

Whatever it is, it will be theirs and it will be an active decision not simply a passive next step.

Rather than a final exam on survival skills our learners demonstrated how to set up a tent, create a stretcher from a blanket and sticks/pokes, and build a fire 🔥

They celebrated with S’mores (even through the Georgia sun turned the chocolate into mush) ☀️ 🍫

End of the year field trip to a playground park 🛝 🌲

While they enjoyed the playground and swings… the hands down favorite was the time they spent exploring the creek 🦆💧🐟 Outside in nature, exploring and creating their own adventures… just as it should be 😊

Did you know aggressive fire ants will kill black ants over a food source? 🐜 🧁

This is what a five year old taught me… and he learned that from his 10 year old friend.

Children are capable and creative. They can handle bugs safely and help save the ants by sharing some lunch and fighting off an enemy.

All they need from us is time to explore.

Some may dislike a schedule with so many edits and changes but I love it ❤️

It shows a benefit of being a part of a small learning community - Flexibility ✨

We have the ability to pivot, change, update, try, go back, and try again. Better yet, some of these changes came from the children. They had some control over their day - reading at the end of the day rather than after lunch, yes we can do that!

Taking ownership of their day and managing their time is a skill that will benefit them for years after they leave the classroom 😊

This is a sign that helps them remember their goals each day. Yes, they set an academic goal but this comes first. They work each day to be more intentional, civil, bring the right energy, and try their best!

It’s been a great last five weeks of Survivor Quest! 🏕️

Not only did they read, watch, and research about Navigation 🧭 Fire 🔥 Edible versus Poisonous Plants 🌱 Shelter ⛺️ Water Sources and Filtration💧and First Aid ⛑️ but they also made a water filter, a fire, a homemade stretcher, and much more!

Hands on exploration and problem solving at its best!
