A newly identified seahorse species Hippocampus amandavincentae – was found by an international team of researchers examining heaps of bycatch at Tuticorin Harbor in southern India after eluding scientists and evading discovery for more than one hundred years.

Seahorses are a globally recognized flagship species threatened by unsustainable fishing, exploitation for traditional medicine and the aquarium trade, and habitat loss.

Dr. Vincent who was the first biologist to study seahorses underwater said; “Knowing that Hippocampus amandavincentae exists as a separate species, recognizing what makes it unique and understanding where it lives is obviously critical for its conservation. Our team at Project Seahorse will do everything we can to support healthy populations of this and other seahorses,”

What an incredible first of week diving in Cayman Brac!! Octopus, squid, nurse sharks, black tips, stingrays, eels, turtles, lobsters, shrimp … the list goes on and on. Such a pleasure to dive and experience the underwater world with young divers who soak it all up like sponges. Might have just found a new dive buddy!!

Over the last decade, tremendous feats from PADI divers and members include:

Thai Cave Rescue (2018): Divers helped lead the rescue diving mission for the “Wild Boars” youth soccer team, who were trapped in the Tham Luang cave system in Thailand for 18 days. The successful rescue was one of the most dangerous dive rescues of all time and earned this group the first PADI Medal of Valor!

Largest Underwater Cleanup (2019): PADI Dive Center Dixie Divers in Deerfield Beach, Florida, united their diving community on June 15, 2019 to bring 633 scuba divers together at the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier to successfully remove 1,450 kilograms (3,200 pounds) of fishing gear and over 9,000 pieces of marine debris in 24 hours.

Largest Underwater Mermaid Show (2021): 110 PADI Mermaids in Hainan, China set a Guinness World Book of Records for the largest underwater mermaid show on April 28, 2021 at the Atlantis Sanya.

Deepest Diving Pool in the World (2021): PADI Dive Center Deep Dive Dubai built the world’s deepest pool for diving at 60 meters (196 feet). The pool was built specifically for scuba divers! Designed to resemble an abandoned sunken city and filled with 14 million liters of water!

Fastest to Dive All Seven Continents (2024): PADI Ambassador Barrington Scott successfully dove all seven continents in a record-breaking 19 days, seeking adventure in Australia, Thailand, Egypt, Malta, the United States, Argentina and Antarctica!

🎉 It's PADI’s 60th Anniversary: Celebrating Six Decades of Making Diving Possible for Everyone!

When PADI was founded back in 1966, scuba diving was considered an extreme sport, and scuba classes were physically grueling. Some instructors required students to do push-ups while wearing their scuba gear. Others placed a tank in each corner of the pool and made students swim from one to another and take hits of air directly from the tank valve.

However, two friends, John Cronin and Ralph Erickson, set out to make scuba diving more accessible. They founded a new training organization based on professionalism and a commitment to safety rather than feats of strength and stamina. Sixty years later, in 2026, PADI celebrates its 60th anniversary.

We are so thankful to be a part of the PADI organization and truly appreciate what is has done for the scuba diving world! 👏
