An ongoing challenge facing a number of land-grant HBCUs is the intentional underfunding of these colleges and universities by states, that withhold federal funds that have been earmarked for these historic institutions, while non-HBCU colleges/universities have been, and are being adequately funded, including receiving more funds than what is needed.

This discriminatory practice of under-funding HBCUs has led to what is now a funding gap of $16 billion dollars for these institutions throughout the south.

What I love about this image are the stories of the people in this tribute to Black History. I can say without question that Howard University alumni have changed the world for the better.

I think of Charles Hamilton Houston and Thurgood Marshall. Two Civil Rights attorneys from the Howard University School of Law strategically dismantled Jim Crow throughout the United States.

The Poetry of Amiri Baraka, father of our fellow alumni brother (and soon to be the next Governor of New Jersey), Mayor Ras J. Baraka. The political and business leadership of Ambassador Andrew J. Young, former Mayor of Atlanta, brother Kasim Reed, the first African American female Vice President Kamala Harris, to the cinematic inspiration of the late Chadwick Boseman and actress Phylicia Rashad.

Then there is the fact that Howard University graduates more African American STEM PhD recipients (33%) than any other university in the country.

Through HBCU Legacy, LLC, our aim is to strengthen our beloved HBCUs, not just Howard University. I can name Alcorn State University, the nation's first land-grant Black College established in 1871 under the leadership of President Hiram R. Revels, who previously served in the United States Senate, as the first African American to be seated in the United States Senate on February 25, 1870.

I am proud to say that my Great Uncle John Adams Martin became the 8th President of Alcorn State University from 1911 - 1915.
