We’re excited to announce that registration is now open for the September 26–27 Feeding Crane seminar in Peabody with Liu Chang’I Sifu of Taiwan.

Liu Sifu is the current lineage holder of the Feeding Crane system and the foremost authority on the art. His technique and power are extraordinary, and he is an engaging, insightful instructor with a remarkable ability to make the principles of the system understandable and applicable. He has been visiting and teaching in the Boston area since 2006.

Liu Sifu will be assisted by Fred Lohse, chief instructor of the Koushinkan Boston dojo, who has practiced and taught Feeding Crane under him for more than 20 years. The seminar will be hosted by Chip Quimby sensei of the Shiseikan dojo, who also has prior experience training in Feeding Crane Kung Fu.

This is a rare opportunity to meet and train with one of the world’s most accomplished practitioners and teachers of Feeding Crane. Space is limited, so early registration is strongly encouraged.

For many karate practitioners, bowing is something we do every class, but few of us are ever taught the nuances behind it.
​
Not everyone has the opportunity to train in Okinawa or Japan, so it’s easy for small details of etiquette to be lost or misunderstood over time. This infographic offers a simple introduction to the different types of bows and some of the customs that have long been part of Japanese culture.
​
Customs vary by region, organization, and dojo, but the goal remains the same: to express respect, gratitude, humility, and sincerity.
​
There’s more to bowing than simply how we move our bodies. The true meaning is found in the respect and sincerity behind the gesture.

I’m especially excited for those who will be training with Liu Sifu for the first time. Opportunities to learn directly from a teacher of his experience, skill, and depth are truly rare, and I believe this will be a very special and memorable experience for everyone attending.

Congratulations to all of the students who successfully passed their belt examinations last weekend. Each new belt represents far more than a change in rank. It reflects hours of practice, perseverance through challenges, and the courage to keep moving forward when training becomes difficult.

What impressed us most was not simply the techniques demonstrated but the positive spirit, determination, and "can do" attitude shown throughout the process. We are proud of each and every one of you and grateful to be part of your journey.

Keep training, stay humble, and continue striving for excellence. Onward and upward.

This past weekend was a truly historic and deeply meaningful moment for our dojo community.
​
In our Children’s Program, 10 students tested for their first-degree junior black belt, while an additional 6 students tested for their second-degree junior black belt. In our Teens and Adults Program, we welcomed another 10 students testing for various levels of black belt rank.
​
Together, these represented the largest test groups in the history of both programs. This was not only immensely special for our dojo, but also for the Okinawa Karate-do Association, which is the organization that our school belongs to in Okinawa, Japan.
​
Making the occasion even more special was the fact that several of the candidates in the adult Black Belt test began their journey years ago in our children's program and continued training all the way through adulthood before qualifying for their adult black belt examination. In our style of karate, this is a truly impressive achievement and a rare example of long-term dedication to the path.
​
These tests are about far more than rank alone. They reflect years of perseverance, discipline, sacrifice, growth, and the support of families and training partners who make this journey possible. To witness students of all ages rise to meet these challenges with such determination is something our entire dojo community should celebrate together.
​
Moments like these remind us that the dojo is more than a place to train. It is a place where character is forged, friendships are built, and lifelong memories are created.
​
Please join me in congratulating all of those who tested this weekend and in taking pride in what our dojo community continues to accomplish together.
