Wrapping up the most transformative and cathartic week of my 41 years of life. After decades of dreaming about Granada, I packed my bags, my flamenco shoes, and immersed myself into a one week Summer program at Escuela Flamenco Manolete , in Sacromonte. The opportunity to nurture my soul with the incredible ancestral knowledge shared by Juana Amaya and Judea (real ICONS) was beyond a dance experience.
From these diosas gitana and the unmatched culture of Granada, I’ve heard about the importance of pausing, listening before dancing, exchanging instead of simply giving, trusting, and paving my own path with openness, kindness, and honoring the roots of this art that has been transforming and saving my life for over two decades.
As I start making my way back home, I am certain that I come back here many times, and that my baile, my heart and my life are forever transformed by this experience. By Juana, Judea and the incredible compañeras I met this week, from all over the world… Brazil, US, Mexico, UK, El Salvador, China, Iran, France, Norway…
Flamenco bring us all together, connects us by this thread of power, vulnerability, ancestral knowledge and passion.
Beyond grateful to the generous, kind, loving and caring Judea for organizing this Summer program, for guiding us on exploring how to bring our souls into our baile, for sharing her family legacy, and for letting me hug her and cry copiously on her shoulder by the end of our classes.
My commitment to flamenco is even stronger. And my commitment is also to Judea and Juana, to really honor everything they offered us, and hopefully bring them to Rhode Island so you can also fall in love with them ❤️
