When it comes to cookie-cutter colleges, Paul Smith’s is anything but. In fact, we’re the only 4-year college inside the boundaries of the world-famous “forever wild” Adirondacks. Students at Paul Smith’s College experience a hands-on education that combines proven career training with a meaningful exploration of self, society and the earth:

- if you’re a forestry major, you’ll play a role in the

sustainable management of the college’s 14,000-acre property

- if you’re a fisheries and wildlife science major, you will learn to tag and track different species

- if you’re an entrepreneurial business studies major, you will write a working business plan for a local operation

Living and learning here requires a special kind of student – someone who values the abundance of our natural landscape and embraces our spirit of creative self-reliance. We call ourselves Smitties and the Smitty experience is one-of-a-kind: http://www.paulsmiths.edu/about/why-paul-smiths/

We have officially started a new academic year at Paul Smith’s College.

At Convocation, our community gathered to welcome the Class of 2030 and celebrate the work, curiosity and determination that define the Smitty experience. In his keynote address, Dr. Antonius Rivera '00 encouraged students to take advantage of the unique experiences that Paul Smith's College offers:

"What makes Paul Smith’s different is what happens once students get here: They are known, challenged, supported and given the opportunity to learn by doing. That combination is what makes Paul Smith’s a place where students can discover what they can accomplish and who they are meant to be.”

That message fits this place. At Paul Smith’s, learning doesn’t stay inside a classroom. It happens on the trails, in the forest, on the water, in the kitchen, in the lab and wherever real work needs to be done.

Here’s to a year of getting out there, getting your hands dirty and discovering what you’re capable of.

A new year starts here 🎓🌲

This Thursday, we will gather for Convocation to welcome a new class of students and mark the beginning of another year of learning, growth, and life at Paul Smith’s College.

We’re especially excited to welcome Dr. Antonius Rivera ’00 back to campus as this year’s keynote speaker. From his time as a student at Paul Smith’s to the work he’s doing today, Dr. Rivera brings a perspective shaped by experience, connection, and the lessons that stay with you long after graduation.

We can’t wait to welcome the Class of 2030 to campus and officially kick off the year. See you at Convocation!

All smiles to start the year ⚽️

Athletics are ramping up again on campus, and our teams are already settling into the rhythm of a new season.

With Welcome Week just around the corner, there’s plenty of energy building across campus. New teammates are coming together, old friends are back on the field, and the first whistle of the year is getting closer.

We’re just getting started.🌲

Today, we celebrate the birthday of Apollos Smith, whose name and legacy are woven into the history of Paul Smith's College.

Apollos Smith built a life and livelihood in the Adirondacks, creating a place that welcomed people to experience the landscape around them. Today, that connection to place continues to shape how we learn at Paul Smith’s.

We don’t just study ideas in a classroom. We put them to work. Students learn through fieldwork, projects and experiences that connect what they’re learning directly to the Adirondacks. Apollos Smith’s legacy reminds us that learning can be grounded in a place, shaped by experience, and strengthened by doing.

Happy birthday, Apollos🌲

Where are they now?

After graduating with degrees in Business Management and Digital Marketing, Holly Bagley '25 is helping build more than a business. As Studio Manager for a new Pilates Addiction location in Ann Arbor, she leads a team, drives growth, and creates a community from the ground up.

Holly says Paul Smith's College gave her the confidence to embrace new challenges, pursue opportunities beyond her comfort zone, and dream bigger. That mindset has taken her from the Adirondacks to Europe, through her first marathon, and now toward her first Half Ironman.

The experiences you build here don't end at graduation. They become the foundation for everything that comes next.

Just two weeks left!

In 14 days, the Adirondacks will become home for another class of Smitties. Our campus trails will fill with new footsteps. Labs will come alive. And our sawmill, kitchens, forests, and waterways will again become classrooms where students learn by doing from day one.

Every year begins with the same promise: real work, real experiences, and a community that's ready to welcome you. We can't wait.
