Our giving momentum continues to grow 📈

A $100,000 commitment from Kathy and Curt Welling, joined by another $120,000 from family and friends, will transform the longtime 24-Hour Study Room into the Hutchins Café, a new campus gathering space where students can connect, study, and gain hands-on experience running a real business.

Their commitment adds to a growing wave of support for the College, including Joe VanWhy’s gift to advance hospitality education and campus facilities, and the Weatherup family’s gift to strengthen the student experience.

These investments do more than improve our campus. They create new opportunities for students to learn by doing and shape the future of Paul Smith’s College.

A moose-t see moment from campus 🫎

Professor Val Titus and students were out surveying College lands as part of an effort to develop a long-term moose monitoring and management plan when they came across the very subjects of their research!

Members of the Paul Smith’s College Fish and Game Club and students in the NRCM capstone course are helping build this management plan from the ground up, documenting sightings, mapping locations, and observing how moose use our forests and managed landscapes.

This is what hands-on learning looks like at Paul Smith’s. Students aren’t waiting for a research opportunity. They’re doing the work, gathering real-world data, and helping shape how we manage the land for years to come.

And sometimes, the fieldwork comes with a pretty unforgettable bonus.

Bobcats are reeling in the hardware! 🎣

Last week, our bass fishing team brought home a championship to remember, taking 1st place, 3rd place, and Big Bass of the Tournament at the North Country Bass Anglers Championships.

Fishing across the Saranac Chain of Lakes and Lake Champlain, our anglers faced tough conditions and heavy winds. But they stayed sharp throughout, landing a monster 5.61-pound largemouth and two podium finishes.

That’s how you make waves on home water. Congratulations to the entire bass fishing team on an outstanding championship finish!

A $3.02 million investment in what comes next.

Paul Smith’s College alumnus and trustee Joe VanWhy is making the largest single gift by an alumnus in College history to strengthen hospitality education and open new doors for students.

His gift will help renovate Pickett Hall, establish a scholarship fund for hospitality students, strengthen faculty leadership, and revitalize the St. Regis Restaurant as a student learning space. It will also help lay the groundwork for an on campus hospitality lab where students can learn hospitality operations by doing the work themselves.

It’s one of the most distinctly Paul Smith’s things you can do here. Our Woodsmen athletes chop, saw, throw, and climb, putting technique, strength and precision to the test while competing in traditional lumberjack events.

But this is more than a competition. It connects students to the working landscape that surrounds them and to a tradition that has been part of Paul Smith’s College for generations.

Craig and Connie Weatherup and their family have given more than $1.25 million to Paul Smith’s College, with a focus on strengthening the support students receive throughout their college experience.

Their gift will help sustain student support services and ensure students and families have the resources they need to navigate challenges, make important decisions, and thrive at Paul Smith’s College. Congratulations to Samantha Severing ’25 and Griffen Johnson ’26 on graduating from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s 25th Basic School for Forest Rangers. They are among 17 new Forest Rangers who completed six months of intensive training in search and rescue, wildfire suppression, water rescue, wildlife protection and law enforcement.

Forest Rangers protect New York’s wild lands while keeping people safe in some of the state’s most challenging terrain. Their work puts conservation knowledge, field skills and good judgment to work when it matters most. That mission runs deep at Paul Smith’s College. Our students learn in the Adirondacks, working directly with natural resources, and the professionals who protect them.

Samantha and Griffen are now taking that experience into service across New York. We’re proud to call them Smitties. 🌲
