Dear Camp Family,
Welcome to Spring and Happy Earth Day!
I am now retired and send my best wishes from Longboat Key, Florida. It's a great place and I find that I can enjoy a more active and healthy lifestyle being here in the winter and spring. Soon I will return to our camp in Paul Smiths for the summer and fall. I feel very fortunate!
In the days of the ancient Greeks, they used the word "Kairos" to symbolize a decision or a change, often relating to it being the "right time." Reflecting on the past few years, I have decided it is the right time to move on along with plans for the future of Regis-Applejack.
Over the past 50 years, it has been a pleasure and an honor to have served the camp community, made up of some 15,000 to 20,000 staff and campers. The experience for me has been nothing short of amazing and it is with a heavy heart that I will make this change. The global pandemic altered many businesses and the world of camping is one of them.
Now, our beautiful camp (although I'm sure different from the Quaker tradition of the past 75 years) will be transitioning into its next chapter. Although I have received many lucrative offers from private individuals to purchase our large lakefront property, I have declined these overtures. I strongly believe in the environment and do not want to see our 65 beautiful buildings, many of which are historic, being torn down and put into a landfill. As such, I have entertained the interest and offers of a few non-profits that would keep the property intact and continue to serve people.
In the weeks to come, I will meet with a number of interested parties. Since nothing is written in stone yet, I welcome any ideas you might have. I look forward to hearing from you and promise to keep our camp family up to date on what transpires.
