Our Decades show proved to us that these artists dedicated themselves to shine on stage. This beginner piano student demonstrated his great sense of playing with rhythm and keeping tempo to guide the rest of his ensemble on the performance stage!

We kicked off our 5th Annual Spotlight Show, DECADES, by traveling back to the 1950s — the decade that helped launch rock & roll into the spotlight!

One of the fun songs featured in this section was “Hound Dog,” performed as an instrumental version by our talented 2GM student musicians. Originally recorded by Big Mama Thornton in 1952 and later made globally famous by Elvis Presley in 1956, “Hound Dog” became one of the songs that helped define the energy, attitude, and sound of early rock & roll.

We chose this song because it represents a major shift in music history — from the big band and smooth vocal styles of the 1940s into a louder, more rhythmic, youth-driven sound that changed popular music forever.

Our students brought that 1950s energy to life through their instrumental performance, helping our audience understand where the story of modern music began.

At 2nd Generation Music, we use performances like this to help students learn not only how to play music, but also why these songs mattered in their time and why they still influence music today.

Our intermediate musicians brought the excitement and energy of the 1990s to life with an instrumental performance of “Livin’ la Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin at our 5th Annual Spotlight Show, DECADES!

Released in 1999, “Livin’ la Vida Loca” became a global hit and helped introduce Latin pop to an even wider mainstream audience. With its bold brass lines, driving rhythm, pop-rock energy, and Latin influence, the song became one of the defining tracks of the late 90s and helped open the door for more Latin artists to reach international pop audiences.

We chose this song because it represents an important moment in music history — when Latin sounds, rhythms, and culture became a major part of global pop music. Audiences still love it today because it is energetic, fun, instantly recognizable, and impossible to sit still through!

This instrumental performance featured our intermediate 2GM musicians playing alongside our 2GM Coaches, showing the power of mentorship, collaboration, and live ensemble performance. At 2nd Generation Music, we are proud to create opportunities where students grow by performing next to experienced musicians and learning the music that shaped generations.

Our talented 2GM Coaches delivered a powerful instrumental performance of “Hotel California” at our 5th Annual Spotlight Show, DECADES.

While the 1970s are often remembered for disco, dance floors, and feel-good grooves, the decade also gave us unforgettable rock, singer-songwriter, and guitar-driven classics.

Originally released by Eagles in 1977, “Hotel California” became one of the most iconic rock songs of the era, known for its mysterious storytelling, unforgettable chord progression, and legendary guitar work.

We chose this song to show our audience that the 70s were not just about disco — they were also a decade of musical depth, creativity, and genre diversity.

Our 2GM Coaches brought this instrumental version to life with skill, expression, and musicianship, reminding our students what excellence sounds like on stage.

At 2nd Generation Music, we believe coaches are not only teachers — they are artists, mentors, and examples for our students. This performance was a beautiful reminder of the musical standard we strive to pass down to the next generation.

Mikayla brought strength, confidence, and personality to the stage with her performance of “I Will Survive” at our 5th Annual Spotlight Show, DECADES!

This performance was especially meaningful because Mikayla is the first recipient of our Emerging Leader Fellowship and serves as our Vocal Assistant. She stepped into this moment with excellence, leading the song with energy and stage presence while being accompanied by two of our junior musicians.

Originally recorded by Gloria Gaynor and released in the late 1970s, “I Will Survive” became one of the most iconic disco anthems of all time. Its message of resilience, courage, and overcoming challenges has allowed the song to live on for generations.

At 2nd Generation Music, this performance reflects exactly what we hope to build — young artists growing in confidence, leadership, musicianship, and purpose. Mikayla’s performance was a powerful example of how music can inspire both the performer and the audience.
