From Crete, BIO210 took an overnight ferry boat to Athens. After a nice meal in the ferry boat cafeteria it was time to rest in our cabins. We woke up in the birthplace of democracy, Athens! A great reminder of the importance of freedom as we celebrate the 250th Anniversary of US independence. Students got a tour of the state-of-the-art Acropolis museum, hiked to the Parthenon temple, and explored the maze of shops in market (where people have shopped since the ancient days). After a beautiful sunset, it was time to pack for the return to NY. Before leaving, we made one more stop for some last minute treats for the flight.

God Bless America as we enter this July Fourth weekend! 🇺🇸

Following a scenic hotel rooftop breakfast, our first stop was the University of Crete. We toured the Marine Ecology and Fish physiology laboratories, as well as the Medical School. Meeting with scientists and getting a special tour of the medical museum of the University was a great treat.

For lunch, we stopped at a traditional taverna where students got to taste some authentic Cretan dishes. The more adventurous students even tried hohlioi (snails) 🐌 prepared in olive oil, garlic, lemon, rosemary and other spices. Next, we traveled East to visit the CretAquarium and the Hellenic Center for Marine Research. After a coffee break at a local beach, our final stop was to Knossos, where we visited the palace of King Minos. Here is the lair of the mythical Minotaur and the labyrinth. Truly a sight to behold!

From Santorini, BIO210 sailed further south to the island of Crete. This is the largest island of Greece and renowned for its historical significance (both ancient and modern) and cultural importance. Arriving at the port of Heraklion, students saw the Venetian harbor fortress (Rocca a Mare), ship repair buildings, and the imposing city walls that still define the city. These city walls now act as a pedestrian “high-line” path for recreation. At night we ate at one of the city's central gathering places, the “lions square”. This area is aptly named for the impressive Venetian fountain with lions.

From Mykonos, BIO210 island hopped to the iconic island of Santorini. While waiting for the ferry boat, students prepared for their species ID quiz, worked on their essays, or just enjoyed a little shade. Upon arrival, we visited the ancient site of Akrotiri. This city is extremely well preserved due to the ash from a massive volcanic eruption (e.g. think a more ancient Pompeii). The people used volcanic rock (colored red, white, or black) for building materials, similar to the modern walls seen around the island. The ancient city of Akrotiri (17th century BC) is a marvel, with multi-level buildings with water lines, indoor toilets (separate sewer lines), beautiful frescos, and many other innovations. It is no surprise that it was thought that this may have been the location for the mythical city of Atlantis. After exploring Akrotiri, students saw the red beach and went for a swim at the black beach in the area of Kamari.

At night, it was time to catch the classic sunset from Fira overlooking the caldera. There really is no place in the world like Santorini!

BIO210 said “Γεια σου (good-bye)” to Evia today. After a nice lunch in the port of Rafina (including grilled sardines, village salad, and fried feta cheese) we continued our journey to Mykonos. An island tour highlighted the famous beaches, a monastery, and other sites. Then it was time for some relaxing at the hotel pool. At night, we took the water taxi to explore the dynamic, eclectic, and wondrous town of Xora. Navigating the maze of streets in the Greek version of the “town that never sleeps” with art galleries, boutique shops, bakeries, restaurants, and other night life.

To wrap up our explorations of Evia, BIO210 explored the mountain streams and estuaries. Students visited a Greek village with a waterfall and refreshing natural pools. The day was complete with a swim at the estuarine beach (where the river meets the ocean). Topping it off was a nice lunch with a view.

The next few days for BIO210 has been focused on mountain ecosystems. The chaparral habitat (similarly found in the mountains of California) is a mix of drought tolerant trees, bushes, and prickers. Students completed two hikes, one to the summit of Mt. Ochi (elevation = ~4500 ft) and the other through the famous Dimosaris gorge. This is a regional biodiversity hotspot.

BIO210 donned wetsuits and snorkeling gear and jumped into the inviting Aegean Sea. Students explored the biodiversity and witnessed invasive species (like the lion fish) that have now established in the Eastern Mediterranean. Tomorrow we head to the Mountains to explore the Dimosaris gorge. 🐠 🐡🐚
