Together they confront a technological device that can help the deaf to hear but may also threaten deaf culture - and their bonds with each other. For Peter Artinian and his wife, both of whom are deaf, a surgical ear implant for their five-year-old daughter Heather means a choice between two worlds - an unfamiliar hearing world and the deaf world, a robust culture in its own right united by a uniquely visual and artistic language. Heather Artinian - precocious, vivacious, and avidly curious about implant surgery - is caught between her deaf parents and her hearing grandparents, as they argue passionately about her future. The debate is sometimes silent, but by no means quiet. When all is done, Sound and Fury speaks volumes about the choices we make and the battles we fight in order to be heard.

Books:

Kwaku and His Hearing Aid by Darren Meade.

This is a story about a boy who everyone thought did not listen to others. His parents and teachers were always telling him off. Kwaku’s mother eventually finds out that Kwaku has difficulties hearing, so they seek help as a family to sort out his hearing difficulty. Kwaku’s story illustrates the problems children with difficulties such as hearing or sight face on a daily bases, the importance of communication within relationships, understanding, compassion and how family, friends and teachers working together can solve problems.

Children's Activities:

Children who cannot hear miss out on learning to appreciate and enjoy music. However, you can make this possible by helping them understand vibration. Use drums and other vibrating instruments in your classroom for activities. Allow children to play with instruments and feel the vibrations. You can also play a drum while allowing the child to feel the rhythm with one hand, and follow the rhythm with the other hand on another drum.

This story is about a father and daughter through diagnosis of hearing loss.

"For a long time, Kaitlyn asked me why we sign. At first, I was reluctant to tell her that she was Deaf. It has such negative connotations in the hearing world. But then I started to spend time with other Deaf people—I started to learn their culture and their language and I saw the advantage of being bilingual and bicultural. When I meet a Deaf person and tell them that my daughter’s Deaf, they smile, or they make the sign for ‘beautiful’."
