I was driving 70 mph on the highway when an irate driver decided I wasn’t moving fast enough for him and proceeded to ram my car to push me off the highway. At one point in the interaction, he walked up to my car, cursing and threatening me before fleeing the scene. I’d never felt so vulnerable. That man could’ve done anything to me on the side of the road. I made so many mistakes throughout that altercation. I was walking around on “white” (oblivious, naive, unaware, unprepared). The responding officer was a young black woman. She asked “where was your gun?” My what? I’d never even considered that. Never thought it was for me. Never thought about being that empowered. Though looking back, that wasn’t the right time to use a firearm, I REFUSE to ever feel that vulnerable again. What I love about good firearm courses, is it’s way deeper than a gun. You build areas like your confidence, self-awareness, and situational awareness, the type of things that could’ve helped me completely avoid the escalation of that altercation. Now I hope to inspire and help other women so they can avoid being an easy target. #blackgunownersmagazine
